Play to the whistle - A perfect example

Re : Man Utd's 2nd goal yesterday

Looks like the officials got that spot on this time.

1) NO!...... Never a penalty

2) YES!..... Player handles balls on the ground

3) YES! .....Referee waves play on - no whistle

4) YES! .....Keeper has ball to play on with but thinks the whistle has been blown for hand ball & free kick given

5) YES!..... Keeper places the ball for kick (even though it was placed in the wrong place anyway),changes his mind & goes to kick again

6) YES!......Keeper leaves ball free in open play

7) YES!..... Opposing forward nips in & scores goal

8) YES!......A perfectly acceptable goal with the keeper entirely at fault for

................................NOT PLAYING TO THE WHISTLE (amongst other things)

Sorry boys what a load of nonsense, a typical example of a referee giving the controversial decision instead of the correct one, how the hell can you give advantage in your own penalty area? the sort of decision only Manchester United ever get, you can see why the refs we get are rubbish if these are meant to be the best !!!!!

Advantage can be given anywhere on the pitch Tom.

The keeper had the ball therefore the ref allowed advantage thus allowing the game to continue. The ball was therefore in play. The fact that the keeper allowed it to be shown to the scorer in the way that he did is no different to him dropping the ball in open play or throwing it out to an opponent & the scorer pouncing. The keeper was at fault for "assuming" the ref had blown & the scorer was alert & quick thinking enough to know what to do, (eventually), as you could see even he dithered before slotting the ball home. Even he wasn't too sure at first if he was doing anything wrong.

Looks like we'll have to differ on this one Tom but I KNOW the referee made the right decision going by what I saw, & no matter how biased one might want to feel,in this case the right decision was made & it was one that I & many other referees would have made also I'm sure.(for what thats worth). PLAY TO THAT WHISTLE!

referees seem to want to court controversy, if he had disallowed it no one would have been surprised at all and it would hardly have got a mention.

I can't disagree with you on those points. Edited by Cookie

Nani used his hand to stop the ball so should have been a free kick to Spurs. The linesman signed something wrong and as usual a Man Utd player had to get involved.

Should not have been allowed to stand and Rio told by the official to keep his nose out of their discussion, plus booked for making comments to the linesman afterwards after the ref gave the goal

Shocking I know but I'm with Spurs on this one

although I follow spurs (notice I didnt say support) I am with Cookie on this one.

Unfair..... Yes, but you have to play to the whistle

It does show though ,that everyone has seen what happened and yet there are two clear opinions on this which kind of sums up forums for you
