Four on the Bounce

I see the reserves continued their winning ways with a 2-0 win at Great Wakering yesterday. Four on the bounce now and equal top with Canvey. It gets better and better. I just hope Cookie and Castle are taking notice. I understand they also have a couple of decent left backs in the squad as well.

Can we have a match report HKS?

HKS is busy today so he has asked to fill in ...

Team - 1 I.Taylor, 2 J.Attwood, 3 M.Jones, 4 A.Riley, 5 D.Cross, 6 M.Lawall,

7 J.Moore, 8 S.Ried, 9 B.Cogger, 10 S.Atkinson, 11 T.Perfect, 12 A.Collins (Ried 70) 14 D.Gibb, 15 M.Kitchen, GK P.Hanson.

On a bright but breezy day at Burroughs Park both sides started slowly with the M25 hold ups and lengthy journey clearly having some effect on The Saints. After about 15 minutes Saints gradually took control with the defence looking solid and the wing back system starting to work. In the 23rd minute one fluent passing moved ended with a smart interchange on the edge of the box between Moore and Atkinson who confidently drove past the keeper to put Saints ahead.

Great Wakering came back strongly following this set back but found Saints defence in no mood to concede. Saints continued to play the better football and doubled their lead on 38 minutes when another fine move released Cogger but his path to goal was blocked by a defender and the keeper combined, the loose ball running free to Atkinson who calmly finished from the edge of the box. City then saw the game out until the half time interval.

Following the break, the game became a little scrapy and frustration certainly got to some of the Great Wakering players who were fortunate to escape without caution. City however kept composed and made the better chances later in the game, Atkinson just failing to control a bouncing ball which would have given him a deserved hat trick, Cogger slipping the ball just wide of the post after evading the keeper and last defender and Collins just failing to connect with a fine cross from Attwood.

The game ended in a fine 2-0 victory for City Reserves who, with an average age on Saturday of just 19, are beginning to show signs of a confidant team who are willing to work for each other. Given time some of these boys will certainly go a long way.

Interesting to note that of the first 5 games played 4 have been against opposition that finished in the top 6 of the Essex Herts and Bordering Counties Premier League last season. The only defeat being the opening game v Canvey who were last years Champions. So all in all a fine start, helped enormously by Baldock Blue and wingback formations (sorry AFF).

Come and see us to find out more.

Next home game Wednesday 10th September v Ilford, kick off 7.45.

Two teams famous for hitting the long ball were Wimbledon & Watford. They're doing really well!!! Both relegated from the Premier & struggling at the wrong end of Div 1.The ressies are better than that!
