Rebels 1-1 Chippenham Town

Rebels took the lead on 50 minutes when an air shot by the Chippenham keeper was duly put in by Danny Burnell. They equalised four minutes later with an unmarked header. Rebels played very well and probably deserved to win the game. We hit the post in the second half and in the first the Chippenham keeper made one superb save from a free kick. We were also denied a blatant penalty for handball in the first half.

If the team want to know why we get on their backs sometimes you only have to look at out last two games. Both 1-1 but they couldn't have been more different in terms of the performance.

Far better performance and the comments cover the reasons why.

The only issue I had today was we were still hoofing the ball high up the pitch to our midget strikers, the only person on the pitch that was smaller was the ref! It lead to only 10% of the balls being won and that ratio proves why this tactic is not working and should not be used with two short forwards and a big defence.

We up our game for the good teams and lower them for the lesser teams - Bateman needs to deliver consistancy if he wants to get the team to where he has set his sights.

Good performance today, same again on Tuesday please.

Were a hugely frustrating side really. Last week we somehow gained a barely deserved point against a side who lost 10-0 this week. Yet this week were the better side against a side in the league above who lost one league game all season and narrowly lost in the Southern Premier Play-Off final to Nuneaton last season! Which Slough Town will turn up for the replay???

As for the game I thought we looked far more solid. I'm glad in recent weeks that we've ditched this silly 'floating' midfield where the midfield were allowed to be here there and everywhere over the pitch as we look less open to the counter attack.

The 4-4-2 formation I think suits us much better, for example with Sincs with Sweeney down the right was more like the days of last season. They both looked far more comfortable with more shape and we looked better as a side. Sonner playing in a slightly withdrawn role also made us look more solid I thought. Impressed with Coyne yesterday as well, thought he ran the midfield, especially 2nd half.

I agree with what Ian said earlier in the week, i'd like to see us sign a targetman who will put themselves about. Our forwards Burnell, Sippetts, O'Connor, Thomas, Sonner are all quite similar with Simon Martin the exception, but I would not class him as a targetman - more someone who brings others into play. Think we'll increasingly need someone like this when the winter months set in and the pitches get worse and you can't play a lot of football on them. Someone in my opinion like the the kind of player Ryan Bird is for Burnham would be ideal for the side I think.

Pleasing performance and result overall. Shame we couldn't finish the job as I think we deserved to win.

However, I do fancy us more away from home and I think we have a fantastic chance on Tuesday.

Chippenham have a chronic injury crisis which worsened yesterday as two more went off injured, including their new signing, the right winger, who looked quite tricky, and a centre half who will now be out for a few weeks. They only named 4 subs yesterday and the two that weren't used were injured anyway. I fancy our chances.

a really good performance frrom the team yesterday against a side from a higher division, an oportunistic goal well taken, however the equaliser again came from the left hand side and poor marking in the box, am i the only one that is getting increasingly frustrated at danny murphys lack of marking and forsight at the back when defending, he consistently stands in no mans land for free kicks and when the opposistion attacks only seemingly noticing an a opposing player as a danger when he receives the ball and then and only then going to close him down, some one has to tell him that that is to late, he has to get closer and not give them a chance to cross the ball. for corners we have to have a floating man sitting over the back to pick up long balls, if nothing else this should pull a defender out of the centre, we are getting there just needs a little more tweeking.

I thought Danny Murphy was motm on Saturday by a country mile.

Yes the cross for the equaliser came from their right wing area and in an ideally world the winger should have been closed down sooner - that said the ball was nodded home by an unmarked striker so questions should also be asked about what was going on in the centre of the pitch.

What struck me about Saturday and I didn't really want to highlight a negative after such a positive performance was the difference between our left and right flanks.

On the right, Sinclair works tirelessly and tracks back to help Sweeney and on occasion Sweeney will bomb forward to provide an overlap for Sincs. This will either lead to him being played in or will create more space for Sinclair.

On the left however, that understanding has yet to build up between Swift and Murphy. Swiift did track back but has a tendancy to wander in field and not hold the touchline. Maybe a better understanding will develop over time or maybe this is a deliberate tactic because it allows Murphy to bomb forward and join the attack. I doubt there is any player on the pitch who covers more ground and puts in more energy than Murphy.

He is an exceptionally good player and IMO we are lucky to have hung onto him. Given that we have only just switched to 4-4-2 let's see how this develops as I think the two combinations on each flank could prove to be awesome and the turning point in our season.

BTW thanks for that tip Webby, as a result of the Chippenham injury crisis I am now having a cheeky flutter on an upset come Tuesday night.

On an interesting side note, one of the players that made their debut for Chippenham (Daryl Taylor) played against Slough during their FA Cup victory over Walsall.

Yep, he's the guy who came on as sub as right-back and immediately he did not get the chance to get over in time to the right-back position, so Alex Haddow skinned Neil Emblen and crossed for Chopper to score the winner against Walsall.

It's interesting how we all see the game different. I too thought that Danny Murphy was excellent but thought Paul Coyne was MOM by a country mile, also John Tebbitt in the NLP gave it to Chris Seeby. One things for sure everyone played well and for the first time this season we probably looked like a team rather than 11 individuals.

Are we finally gelling as a team?

I see where you are coming from on the right hand side v's left hand side but part of that's because Sweeney and Sinclair have played down the same side for about 10 years together at Slough, Hemel and Chesham. It's all pretty new down the left, but I also thought Swifty played well and it's ganna take time for him and Murphy to develop a partnership.

As for the goal coming from the left, I like Martin says are far more concerned about the free header six yards out with nobody in sight of the player. Crosses come into the area - fact. You can't always stop them, but players should not be allowed unmarked free headers six yards out.

Here's hoping we can do it tomorrow night. I just hope the team that played on Saturday turns up, not the one v's Bedworth.

When crosses come into the area players will not always be marked properly and goals will be scored - fact.

The problem needs to be sorted out when either happens on a far too regular basis leading to goals being scored - fact.

BTW I agree Chris, I thought Swift had a good game and Coyne ran Danny close for the MOTM.

Part of the point I was making was that Sinclair and Sweeney have a great understanding built over time and Swift and Murphy are a brand new combo so we need to give it time. I am looking forward to tomorrow and expecting good things.
