Basildon's Marsh is the first of many

DESPITE going down to a disappointing defeat to Eton Manor in the Gordon Brasted Trophy on the day, October 9 could have proved to be a rather important date in the history of Basildon United, writes Richard Mann.

It saw 16 year old Alex Marsh make his debut for the Bees and therefore become the first player from the club’s highly successful Youth Academy to make an appearance in senior football.

The under 16s, currently top of the table in their Eastern Junior Alliance Essex Division, are managed by Daren Burgess who took the side to 3rd place in their inaugural season at the under 15s age group in the EJA.

Dean Neil, the Bees first team keeper, has helped Daren with coaching and both have expressed their satisfaction with a start of the season which has seen them beat last seasons champions AFC Hornchurch 2-1 at their ground.

Many of Daren’s boys have played with him for a number of years including the time he run the highly successful Copeland Colts side in the Thundermite League before he came to Basildon United at the start of the 2009/10 season.

Joe Bullman, the Under 15s manager, is new to the club this season and he brings with him the bulk of his Lee Chapel Boys team.

Joe was delighted to bring his team to Gardiners Close as it meant that his boys would be playing on the main pitch at the stadium which is unusal for his age group.

While Joe recognizes that his team may take time to adjust to the pace and strength of Eastern Junior Alliance football hes hoping to emulate last season’s under 15s success story.

With such a strong Youth policy at Basildon United it looks likely that Alex Marsh could well prove to be the first of many promising youngsters making the breakthrough to the senior side.

what a rubbish story - there was me thinking that the story would be about Basildon being the first team to play their games at Marsh Farm

Ive just seen this article, got to say its most refreshing to see a ESL team giving youth a chance as opposed to paying out inflated wages to under performing players, well done Basildon United. It looks like being a exciting next few years at Gardiners Close, who knows there could be another Michael Kightly or Steve Tilson amongst their ranks.

Stansted's F.C. current average age for this season's 1st team squad is only 21 years old,a few older players that have played at ryman league level mixed in with the younger players which has also included especially in the last 2 weeks 4/5 under 18 players,my personal view is that its all to do with the youth structure your club has in place, our better under 16s have had a taste of under 18s football this season, the same can be said for our under 18s players that have progressed to our reserves that play in the olympian league and the more talented under 18s being involved this season with the current 1st team squad.

The future is looking bright for stansted fc with all these young players progressing and being given the chance at a higher level, long may it continue.
