Cup Football

Is'nt the FA Trophy prize money quite important to the club-and indirectly funds improvement in the team enabling it to climb up the leagues ?

Money aside,if you have never won a trophy as a manger or player (and even supporters)-maybe you don't miss the 'success'and reward that a cup run brings.

If you have experienced it-is the pain of losingmuch greater-and thus the will to win is greater-and thus teams who are successful in cups tend to be continually successful-whereas teams used to losing in cups-do the same every year-they simply get used to failure.

Success breeds success-and cross ferilises into other competitions.

I guess it depends what you look for in the competition-unfortunately,i won't be there-but equally ,a fixture against whitehawk has just as much appeal as a fixture in the trophy against Rushden.I simp;ly want my team to win-whoever they play

ESimilarly-is there ant reason why a Ryman side can't at least (with the luck of the draw) get to the quarter finals of the trophy.

Why can't that be margate-and look at the prize money it would bring in for the good of the club.

I think you will find that conference teams have no contempt whatsoever for the competition-where did you get that from ?A day out at wembley normally goes down quite well

JJ he was only asking for cups we have won so did not do the League title.

As for those that belittle any competition like the FA Trophy we might as well say we will not enter the FA Cup as we have no chance of winning it as the FA have the cheek to allow clubs like Newcastle, Manchester Utd and Chelsea play in it.

If the competition is part of the membership of whatever League, Association or County that we are part of then WE PLAY. END OF DEBATE.

One thing showed last night and that was the no show of Wayne Wilson, you would've thought that he would take control of things especially as he needs to prove a thing or two to the manager.

I do sometimes wish that TWATS (yes TWAT) like you did not turn up and destroy players with your inane stupid comments.

(oh forgot you never go into the bar to talk to players after the game as it is beneath you)

No wonder players do not perform with the likes of you around.

Do you know the managers and assitant managers instructions to the player.

Worse armchair critic to write gobbledegook on this forum you are DEREK (so bad you have to have your name in capitals)

No wonder I do not read it or comment on it anymore.

Will await this post being deleted now as I have dared to be critical to one of the Hartsdown moron brigade.

Firstly I don't use language like yours to anyone i therefore assume that you are one of the drinking and swearing brigade who thinks women should stay at home, secondly the player concerned did'nt know I was going to the game,so I can only come to the conclusion he would put in a bad performance whether I was there or not

third did the manager tell him to go and play a bad game, I don't think so. Finally if you don't like my comments tough I'm entitled to make them as are you, whoever you are.

As regards the FA Trophy prize money, don't forget gate receipts are split so, if we win in front of 300 or so people on Saturday, the £2,200 will probably mean we break even on the day and no better. To win £15,000 in prize money would mean us winning though four rounds of the Trophy, something the club has only achieved once in its history.

I similarly would like to see us progress alot further in cup games.

Its ok 'dismissing' the league cup, but if we get defeated saturday-thats two cup exits in a week-and that is demoralising all around.

Difficult job for the manager to get the sqaud balance right for games like league cup-i think we all accept the need to play a few fringe players-but if you lose-you only get the one chance.

Win-and you get maybe 2/3 games in the league cup to do similar-as i say -difficult for the manager to get the balance right.

However-against lower leagure opposition-its a reasonable bet that they will play a strong side-so as manager-do you similarly play a strongish side ?

Whilst many supporters similarly 'dismiss' the league cup'as an irrelevance at this time of year-its the sort of competition the club needs games in to stimulate interest in Jan/Feb-when we are sitting mid table with just one game a week, and season has effectively ended in January, interest lost, crowds dwindle further and everyone starts hoping for the next season

The FA Trophy is another competition that should be scrapped. You have to wade through a forest of unappealing fixtures before you can hope to draw a Conference team, and Conference teams, especially the ex-League clubs, have contempt for the competition, so crowds are very poor. I think Oxford United only took about 50 fans to Tonbridge the other year.

League Cup crowds before the final don't improve as the competition progresses so I don't see how it keeps interest up. However, I think the Kent Senior Cup has some value as there are far fewer teams in it, so a better chance of getting to the final, and you can be drawn against the likes of Dover or Dartford, so at least the prospect of a half-decent crowd. Though we usually seem to get dross like Chatham.

I can't see your argument for scrapping the FA Trophy, which has always been the most prestigious cup for Non League clubs. It may be insignificant to some ex league clubs, but it is still the biggest competition for MOST non league clubs. Ask any Margate supporter who saw us beat Woking in the Trophy several years ago, after they had won the competition two seasons running. I would disagree when you say that with the £2200 prize money we would just break even. At a complete guess, even with expenses taken out for the away side, say £500.00, on a crowd of just 300 that would still leave gate recipets of about £1000 each. With £2200 prize money that would be the equivalent of an extra 220 adult paying supporters through the gate. I think most supporters would love to see the team earn the most realistic chance of playing at Wembley. As has been published above take a look at the prize money on offer.

We beat Woking in 1998, that was before two-up, two-down from the Football League and play-offs in the Conference. There is no doubt Woking wanted to win that day, but were we to play a Conf club now would they be that bothered? No.

Conference clubs already have the opportunity of going to Wembley via the play-offs. The Trophy is a complete pain in the backside to them. The crowds they get for Trophy ties are massively below average. You make a few quid from the final but not as much as you might think after the FA have raked off their share. And we are effectively in the third division of non-league so our chances of making the final are remote.

Sorry CE but I don't agree. As I said before, maybe some clubs in the Conference, but not many. Look at some of the clubs in the Conference who don't even break 1000 on their gates, don't you they would be glad of the money. As I said before the vast majority of non league clubs support the Trophy. I know that it was the one thing that Aldershot wanted to win before returning to the Football league. I know they didn't come down to the Conference from the league, but with crowds of over 2500 they were certainly not a small club.
