Saturday 9th October 2010

Ryman League Premier Division

Goalscorers:

MARGATE: Marsden (8), Welford (21, pen 77,79), Saunders (51)

Grant (86) HORSHAM: Andrews (36)
After reaching the dizzy heights of 18th place in the Ryman Premier Division on Tuesday, it was back to ‘as you were’ for Horsham as they fell to their heaviest defeat since losing by the same scoreline to Harrow Borough nearly 2 years ago.
Margate had failed to defeat the Hornets in any of their previous 5 meetings and the result, Margate's best in 8 years, was all the more surprising given the Hornets' recent record of just 2 goals conceded in 4 games and is sure to provoke an inquest from John Maggs in the days ahead. Maggs, a rare absentee from the dug-out due to overseas commitments, had understandably decided to stick with the same side that had recorded its first home win of the season against Tooting during the week with the addition of Paul Kennett in place of Tom Graves.
After the promise of an Indian Summer this weekend, the supporters would have been forgiven for feeling a little disappointed with the overcast offering on the Kent coast for this game. As it was, the football wasn’t to provide a more promising alternative to a Picnic in Horsham Park, regardless of what the scoreline suggests.
In a first half of few chances, one of the only ones that didn’t result in a goal came in the opening minute when James Rogers broke down the left hand side and got a shot away that was well beaten away by Mark Zawadski. Dean Wright looked lively for the Hornets throughout the game and looked like he may have got a chance for his first goal of the season when Ryan Woodford played in the youngster with a killer through ball. But, just as he was about to pull the trigger, Curtis Robinson cut across and made an excellent slide tackle to deny his shot from hitting the target.
Horsham's sorry afternoon of woe began as early as the 6th minute when Gary Charman left the field, complaining of movement in his face. Coupled with the fact his mask was not fitting correctly, coming off seemed to be the best move for all parties and Sam Tucknott replaced the winger on the left of midfield.
Margate flew into the lead before the visitors had time to reorganise when some slack defending by Ben Andrews resulted in him losing the ball to Jay Saunders on the edge of the box. Saunders hit a beautifully weighted crossfield ball to Shaun Welford who played the ball across goal for Darren Marsden to tap in to an empty net.
The goal failed to wake up the Hornets who proceeded to give the ball away in the middle of the park and continue to play long hopeful balls forward for Wright or Pat Harding to chase. They were punished again in the 20th minute with a move that began with Andrews misjudging a long crossfield ball which went straight out for a throw in. The resulting throw caught out Miles Mitchell at left back and Ishmail Kamara ran on to the loose ball, took it around Zawadski before pulling the ball across goal for Welford to put the ball into an empty net.
Horsham’s one and only real chance came in the 34th minute, Anthony Storey providing a cross from a free-kick and Andrews rose above everyone in the box to head the ball home. It was to be the strongest passage of play for the Hornets as they pushed for their equaliser and the closest they would come after that was a big shout for a penalty as Tucknott was brought down in the corner of the 18 yard box. Unfortunately, the referee saw the incident differently and waved play on.
Mr Wilde blew the whistle for half time and there was optimism amongst the Horsham support after finishing the first half a lot stronger than they started it.
H/T Margate 2 Horsham 1
The half-time pessimism was quickly extinguished early in the second half, though, as panic set in at the back again when a long, Rory Delap style, throw into the box was met by Saunders who headed the ball past Zawadski.
Horsham's only chance of the half fell to Harding when Wright's long range shot deflected onto the crossbar and Harding was quickest to react, latching on to the loose ball only to disappoint by sending his shot high and wide in what was a glorious chance for the Horsham front man.
Two goals in quick succession killed the game off for the Hornets, with yet another penalty conceded to enable Welford to send Zawadski the wrong way from the spot. The former Ramsgate man completed his hat-trick just a minute later with a fierce left foot diagonal shot to create euphoria amongst the home fans. The icing on the cake came for Margate with 6 minutes to go, substitute Dean Grant presenting his manager with the perfect birthday present with his side's 6th goal following a goalmouth scramble. This was a disappointing day for the Hornets and for stand-in boss Ian Payne. After such an encouraging second half performance on Tuesday and keeping the same team, the way they surrendered to this Margate side can only result in changes amongst the side yet again. Perhaps the Championship Manager Cup game against Bognor could provide those desperate for a first team place a chance to prove themselves for the FA Trophy next weekend
