Player Motivation

Recommended Posts

Guys: I was having a chat with a couple of the players after the Marlow game and it was said to me that some of the players are not happy with some of the

comments on here. I really think negative comments on here do the team no favours at all. We should be getting behind the team, not moaning on here when

we dont win every week. If you want to watch a team that wins every week go and follow Chelsea. Remember we are talking about part-time players, not the

likes of high earning Premiership players.

Well, for what it's worth, and at the risk of sounding like an old fogey, I would tend to agree with those players. A few people on here need to grow up a bit and take some time out before venting after a game. A lot of the comments are often knee-jerk reactions and some really do make me cringe.

Ok the players get upset, but so do the fans! Providing comments do not cross the rules of the forum, then why can not honest opinions be expressed. The players may only be part time, but they are getting paid, the fans are paying to watch. Yes I agree with you Matt that time should be taken to reflect before posting in anger, but I hope the right to express an opinion is not curtailed to pamper the players feelings.

I agree WR and have believed this for a while. I was too told this information on Saturday from a players relation.

This wouldn't be the first time comments like this have been made. Only a few seasons ago Derek Sweetman made direct comments about the forum and the negative impact it has.

Sadly it's only 1 or 2 particular individuals that cause the trouble.

I do understand that sometimes comments on here do go a little over the top (especially during the aftermath of a particularly bad performance), but I really think that a lot of what has been said on here is little more than constructive criticism.

If it were me being criticised on forums such as this, I would be going out of my way to prove the fans wrong via performances on the pitch. I would not be moaning behind peoples backs about how unfair it is.

Here's what Sweetman said on the forum when he left as per Tom's message from the Maidenhead Ad

“I absolutely love the job. Yes it’s a tough job, probably the toughest in the division with the history and the fan base.

“Everyone wants to be the best, but you have to bite your tongue and remember that we’re in non-league football.

“Wilko and Mark got slaughtered by the fans too. But everyone of us did what we could because we love the club.

“It had a negative impact on the players we tried to sign. A couple left last season because of things said on the forum. When players read it they think ‘if I have a bad performance I’ll get lambasted’.”

A few things strike me here. First of all I think it's important to remember that everyone's entitled to their opinion and their comments on the forum. The supporters either pay for a season ticket or £8 entry fee and the players do get paid.

However, having said that I think that any negative criticism through comments on the forum should be constructive or put in perspective, Some comments as we've seen on here from one or two individuals are pathetic, cowardly nasty cheap shots from 'keyboard warriors' aimed personally at players which is not on (cue a smart comment from one keyboard warrier in reply to this!). If I were a player i'd just ignore them - I certainally do.

Think the players need to remember it's one or two individuals out of the 230-300 individuals that attend out home games that make these comments which is a tiny percentage of the attendance. The majority of the support at STFC is friendly and constructive. You'll get these keyboard warriors' at all clubs as a player though unless you decide to go and play in front of teams with no support and simply have people that are board members turning up for the games.

With regards to the comments on this forum as supporters as i've said before I think were guilty of thinking were Brazil when we win and the Dog & Duck when we lose. Were our own worst enemy at times. For example take the FA Cup game against Erith. I did not go to that match and by all accounts we were poor, but reading some of the comments on here you would have thought we had not won a league game this season and lost every match 10-0, when the reality of it was that we had a poor day at the office and the previous week we won 5-1 away from home and were sitting pretty in the league. I was absolutely amazed reading some of the comments. I also think we forget sometimes there is another team were playing. They can be good as well!

To be honest I think we all (players & fans) want to desperately get out of this league as well and have had enough of this level of football. I think that's part of the frustration as you look around at an away game this season apart from Hitchin and Rugby we'll 90% of the time outnumber the home support which is a bit frustrating. Plus what's the max away support we've had this season? 30 from Marlow (including the teddy bear) and that's only down the road! Plus when teams come to you and win, then act like they have won the league when they beat you is very frustrating.

Lets pull together roll our socks up on and off the pitch and get out of this league!

What I find amazing is the hypocrisy of some people when you compare the comments they make during the game and then write the complete opposite on this forum.

If players want to be wrapped up in cotton wool and be praised as a God like premiership prima donna players then they can join a premiership club – that is if they have the skills!

If players want respect then they have to earn it, some think it is just a case of waking onto the pitch!

And for those players who don’t like reading about their poor performances when they have gifted the opposition 3 goals, then they have the choice of not coming on this forum.

Sometimes I get frustrated by some of the comments on here..and some take it to far...but I have to agree for once with Staines Rebel...

Many people work bloody hard behind the scenes of this club and put many more hours into the keeping things going, to ensure we have

a team to support ... We all have to accept that we could do better and have to just ensure we do... However the players should not be over and above

some of the more constructive comments...some supporters make good and fair reflections...we are all apart of this team and all I ask

is that things should not become personal nor abusive ...(there is more than one way of skining a cat) constructive observations should always

be allowed.....Its part and parcel of this great game of ours... chris sliski - personally

That still doesn't make it right for some of the people on this forum to express themselves in the way they do and attack the players does it?

No, that doesn't make it right but by the same token the players can, as we do, distinguish between the constructive comments and those that just post knee-jerk abuse. If they cannot put up with the constructive stuff then they need to think long and hard about the job they're doing.

I would love to see a player come on here and apologise for a poor performance, however none have had the guts to do that! So until that time the comments about poor performances will have to come from the regular contibuters.

Why should they? They are semi pro footballers, they play football that does not include the need to answer to fans comments on forums. Nor does it mean they should apologise to you.

How about you speak to the players instead of insisting they answer your demands? I'm pretty sure they would appreciate that more than you coming onto the forum after a game and mouthing off.

As a matter of interest, why would the players come on here and read the comments? If it's because they lke reading when everyone thinks they've played well then surely it cuts both ways when they haven't had a good game. That said I still don't agree with out and out criticism of certain players.

Going back to WR's original post, I am glad that some of the players are not happy with some of the comments on here - at least it shows they care!

Now all they have to do is show they care by coming up with good performances on the pitch, and then the praise will follow.

I've just heard that some of our players are human, have jobs, families and can't guarentee they will play a decent game of football everytime they pull on a Slough shirt. Well this is disgraceful. Surely once they sign for us they should avoid all other human contact and dedicate their lifes to playing for Slough. Dying if they have to for the cause of the club. I pay my two and six each week, and have every right to scream and shout at random strangers (and of course the ref, who is always the worst ref i have ever seen)...
