HISTORIC PROGRAMMES NUMBER 4 PART 1

7-10-1922 BARKING TOWN v DULWICH HAMLET LONDON CHARITY CUP LOST 1-0

I don’t know when we started issuing programmes but this is the earliest home programme that I have seen and my copy is a photocopy. We were playing in the London League Premier Division. As this had 16 clubs we no longer played in the South Essex League as well.Dulwich Hamlet were in the Isthmian League and had reached the semi final of the previous season’s F A Amateur Cup. Although there was no formal pyramid the Isthmian League was recognised as being 2 levels above the London League so a 1-0 defeat was a reasonable result for us.

We finished 5th in the Premier Division and the reserves were 3rd in Division 1.Other teams in the league were Custom House,Leyton,Redhill,Grays Athletic,Rostall Heath,Edmonton, Gnome Athletic, Gwynes Athletic,Tooting Town,Sterling Athletic,Catford Southend,Cray Wanderers, Walthamstow Grange,Burberry and Temple Mills while Division 1 included Millwall United, Metropolitan Railway and Mitcham Wanderers who later amalgamated with Tooting Town. Sterling Athletic represented the Sterling Company in Dagenham whose ground was in Victoria Road ,later occupied by Briggs Sports and currently by Dagenham & Redbridge.

We beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 in a friendly, held Clapton (now Leyton) Orient 1-1 in the London Challenge Cup before losing the reply 5-1,lost 5-3 to Clapton in the F A Cup,beat Chesham 4-2 and Civil Service 2-1 in the F A Amateur Cup before losing 4-1 to Saint Albans City. We reached the final of the West Ham Charity Cup ,losing 1-0 to Custom House.

Our team was listed as W.G Whistle, R.R.Evans,F.Ferrari,J.Kemp,W.E.Dudley,J.F.Gleeson,E.C.Mayes C.W.Bush, C.Purkis, W.H.Sydes,W.F.Beckford. We played in red and white hoops and Dulwich in blue and pink. The players were numbered from 1-22 and the game kicked off at 3.30 pm.As there is a change to the Dulwich team marked it is quite possible that our team was as per programme, unless the original owner was a Dulwich supporter who had not noted our changes.

Admission prices were Premier Team games –adults 8d, ladies and boys 4d, enclosure 7d extra and for First team (ie reserves playing in the first division) adults 6d,ladies and boys 3d ,enclosure 4d extra. Season tickets were available to vice presidents at £1/1/- and members 12/-. ( 5p = 1/- : 2.4p = 1d)

To be continued
