Thought i'd start a general thread about the QE stadium and our hopefully upcoming move into the clubs new home.

Progress.Opinion.updates..ect

At least half of our longterm fans do not attend club meetings. As such information and discussion on the subject proves hard to come by.So hopefully this thread can answer the general fans questions and/or observations on the very important next phase in our clubs development.

Ok.Let me start the ball rolling.coffee%20(2).gif

Firstly, congratulations are in order for all those at our club who have worked so hard in firstly securing the lease on the QE,but also the work that is ongoing and will undoubtedly continue be put into the site in order to create a new longterm home for the football club that everyone can be proud of.

Have seen the photos on our offical website regarding the progress so far..The Track looks very smart .(Although It should do,as it took up 50% of the entire budget). Can someone just confirm that the track is 6 lanes? As this is not clear to see by the photos posted.Secondly,i know it may only be camera angles,BUT the pitch looks a hell of a long way from the main stand.I know other stands will be provided very nearer the pitch, but the distance could make widespread use of the mainstand unviable as the best place to view the game. (surely the first criteria of any Main stand??)

The track seems to be where it was originally, and with the lower seats removed, this only seems to lengthen the distance away from the main stand.I also see there is a longjump pit next to the main stand?.The black surfaced area between the main stand and the track looks wider that the actual track itself!! and more than doubles the distance from stand to pitch. No doubt I will be using the 'inside the track' stands to watch our games from,so it shouldn't unduly concern me,but it does seem to me that fighting so hard to reduce the track lanes from 6 to 8 was a waste of effort,if the pitch will still be exactly where it was if there was 8 lanes?

The track is definitely six lanes.

The current seated stand at Brimmo will be located on the far side of the QE, directly next to lane six.

The current covered standng will be located directly behind one of the goals, inside the track.

I believe the current uncovered seating at QE will be smartened up and put on the near side, again, directly next to lane six.

The stand in existence at QE is a long way from the pitch, there can be no denying that, although no further than the stand at Wingate for example which offers decent views.

Once the current phase (doing up the external areas) is complete then phase 3 begins which is the longest and costliest: Doing up the internal side of the building. The new pitch has been cut a couple of times and, as you would expect, is in great shape.

That is all I know...

I was under the impression that there weren't any plans (at least in the short term) to use the seating in the 'stand' / main building. I seem to remember being told this at one of the meetings about the QE earlier in the year. Not sure if this is still the case - things could well have changed between then and now.

Not sure who will walk round the running track to take up a seat - low down and 6 lanes from the pitch.

Would be better to take the seats out of the existing stand and have 2 x covered terrace areas behind each goal inside the track. This would avoid having a "cold end" that we currently enjoy !! and create some covered atmosphere.

Agree some thought needs to be given to the long length of open side opposite the stand, but it would be very expensive to terrace that length - ie the length of the pitch..

If we can get into the 3rd round proper of the FA Cup that will bring in a few bob ! !

Great idea..Ideally i think that would be the best sollution...As a back up plan how about just having the seated stand behind one of the goals rather than over the far side?

Just my opinion, but I do not think seats behind the goals work at this level of football.

Supporters stand and seats will/ could be damaged.

As you say, taking the seats out of the current stand and using the stand as a terreced area behind one of the goals seems the way to go.If its unviable to put the removed seats into the main stand, they could always be placed under the main stand (alongside where the old seats will hopefully be reinstated)

Food for thought -

I thought the astro-turf section layed alongside the Leatherhead pitch along the touchline was a good idea.

Saves that area of grass getting cut up and becoming a mud run for the officials ( lino ).

Simple idea - easy to do.:applaus:

ps

Leatherhead also had one of the best pa systems I have heard at this level of football.

Unlike others we could all mention from last Tuesday !

Indeed. The same thought occurred to me (re the astroturf - I wasn't aware there was a PA on Tuesday).

  • 3 weeks later...

Will these Government spending cuts have an impact on the programme / works ?

Don't think it will, the building is covered in scaffolding & work has commenced on repairing the outside fabric already.

We're going to start some work there on Sunday morning, digging out the bases for the manager's dugouts if anyone would like to give a hand? If you can then please let us know on Saturday.

For those that didn't see the Standard on Friday, The Mayor of London's sports fund is giving £250,000 to refurbish the dressing rooms at the QE Stadium. I've got a copy of the article in the shop if any one wants to see (Though I'm sure that it will probably be available on line somewhere?)

Rundown stadium gets a £250,000 legacy boost

matthew.beard.gif Matthew Beard, Sports News Correspondent

22.10.10

An athletics stadium where British champions Sebastian Coe, Daley Thompson and Linford Christie once competed has become one of the first major beneficiaries of the Mayor's fund to boost sport before the Olympics.

The Queen Elizabeth II Stadium in Enfield will receive £250,000 from the Olympic sports legacy fund as a contribution to a £1.2 million upgrade.

The stadium is one of 14 awards totalling £1.2 million from the facilities pot of the £15.5 million legacy fund which was established by Boris Johnson last year. It aims to deliver a grassroots legacy in London, where only one in five adults regularly takes part in sport.

Cash from the Mayor's fund will be used to refurbish the changing rooms of the art-deco style, Grade II-listed stadium in Carterhatch Lane, which was inaugurated in 1953, the coronation year. It was closed two years ago after falling into disrepair and became a magnet for flytippers. Schools were forced to cancel their sports days or transport pupils to the Lea Valley stadium five miles away.

The turnaround came in October 2008 when the local council struck a deal for Enfield Town Football club to move in and become the anchor tenant. This summer a new track was laid and the refurbishment will be completed with the Mayor's cash.

Speaking at the unveiling of the track, Lord Coe, who trained there in the Eighties, said: "I competed at the QEII stadium as a young athlete. It holds some special memories for me and helped shape my career. London 2012's vision has always been to use the power of the Games to inspire change, and Enfield demonstrates how Londoners are taking advantage of the once-in-a lifetime opportunity of staging the Olympic and Paralympics in 2012."

Other beneficiaries of the fund announced today include a squash and tennis club in Bound's Green, refurbishment of the Crouch End lido and a new sports hall in Redbridge that will be used by Olympic athletes.

Good stuff!

It reads as fantastic stuff, but without sounding like an alarmist, we are almost into November and have just been awarded this 250k to do substantial work to the QE building. I've worked with builders a few times and gut feeling tells me we'll be hard pushed to see it all done in time.

Anyway, the whole process seem's in good hands, just wishing for a smooth completion of the schedule of works. Roll on August and a new home.
