Of course Richard, it's a shame that it annoys you so.

I too am a fully paid up atheist, but some of my best friends are committed Christians Jews and Muslims. I do not think that they are all mentally ill - just brainwashed from birth by their parents/ elders. Religion was, in my view, invented by mankind to try to explain the unexplainable. And as a means of getting people to behave well towards each other (somewhere along the way that often went badly wrong, didn't it?).

The teachings of the world's various major religions can't all be right, but they could all be wrong!

Horace, I'm sure that there is probably a lot of truth in what you say, but whether you are christian, jew, muslim, budhist, hindu, agnostic or even atheist you have a belief system that sustains you and it's yours, unique in a way. So many are rabid or extremist and determined to push it down your throat, atheists included - look at the likes of Richard Dawkins, spends his whole life trying to convince other people to believe what he believes, completely crackers if you ask me. Some people just seem to allow themselves to get too easily upset over how other people choose to live their lives and what they want to believe in. Talk about mental issues, it's the prosetylisers and extremists you want to watch out for, never happy unless sowing hatred or bombs.

Certainly many organised religions are wrong in many respects however it's remarkably odd how many have central tenets that are similar, maybe stripped down they could all be right!

Or perhaps it doesn't matter. Whats it got to do with Ed Milliband who is hardly a hypocrite for questioning a war that many MP's voted to join when he wasn't even an MP at the time.

I am an agnostice, dyslexic insomiac.

I often lie awake at night wondering if there's a dog!!!! cheesy%20(2).gif

i thought you were a devout Catholic Hookey? Is it true that Catholic Women don't believe in sex after marriage?

Jeez, my wife must be a cafflick.

I am actually a non believing Catholic. Apparantly the fact I don't believe anymore does not stop me being a Catholic. It seems that as the Pope made me a Catholic (Not personally), only the Pope can excommunicate me.

I used to be an Altar Boy, but I was dismissed because I refused to kiss the Bishop's ring!!!! TRUE STORY.

if you knew the heartache that religion is playing in dividing my family at the moment, all for something i dont believe in but will go to the end of the world to support other peoples views because i believe that the bigorty it shows will get my daughter a better education, then you will know A) how p1ssed off i am and B) how totally fed up with life in general, surely if you believe in religion or not it should not make me feel that way.

beginning to think you are right lol

Its never easy deciding whats best for your child but in my opinion a well balanced home life with supportive parents who read to them from a very early age, and give them the love, time and guidance they deserve, is much more important than which school you choose. For my part I don't agree with faith schools because I dont believe in indoctrinating kids into something that may well be wrong. I'm a life long socialist but I would never have sent my three to a socialist school, even if one had existed, because I think its important for children to make their own judgements and form their own opinions without being brainwashed into believing fairy tales or political dogma.

I also think its wrong to lie to get a child into a "better" school as it teaches them that lying and cheating is acceptable and that's not a nice thing to be when they reach adulthood.Hope you don't think this is being rude, its just honestly held views.

i know where you are coming from OS but to be honest, alice is a practicing catholic and i am not although everyone at her church is aware of my stance on religion.

We have recently been on a baptism course where there were 4 couples, every single couple only had one catholic parent,it is not something that the church seems to worry about.

To be honest,i think the catholic schooling is of a very good standard compared to many other schools, especially in the borough,st josephs is an exceptional school at primary & junior level and campion and sacred heart are only really bettered by coopers.

If i had the choice she would got to either of those two schools, nowadays at these catholic schools it is completely about schooling rather than religion as it was in the past

there is an element of truth in it,if i was that bothered i would put my foot down but the truth is that the schooling is good, there is a sense of community with the catholic church and although some people take religion far too seriously, alice and their family for the most part are not completely crackers about religion

About fifteen years ago an atheist mate of mine died, but while he was in a coma and on his deathbed his wife, a devout catholic had him converted into the catholic faith. At the funeral at St Marys quite a few youngsters were taken out of school and were part of the ceremony, which disgusted those of us that were non catholics. We also thought it odd that there was lots of elderly people at the funeral who kept asking whose funeral it was. The strange thing is, it was quite a happy affair in many ways and gave his widow a great deal of strength and comfort.

I have friends that where born into the faith, and even in their sixties they are too frightened to reject it because of fear of hell and damnation. I'm just glad that I have never had those problems, and its good that faith schools are now completely about education.

alice and her brother both went to the local catholic school, they have the same amount of religious studies as i had 20 years ago at my comprehensive (2 hours per week)

Any more than this would be ridiculous but i believe it used to be 6-7 hours a week at many catholic schools

Years ago when I was a school governor we had the opportunity to drop school assembly and religious studies. Even though I am a confirmed atheist,I spoke against those proposals because I didn't want any child that held these beliefs to feel as isolated as I was working in a right wing environment where some colleagues were afraid to even speak about their political beliefs.

Getting back to the subject of this thread, much has been made in the gutter right wing press about Ed Millibands atheist views and the fact that hes an unmarried father. Tony Blair is a married god fearing father, and that didn't stop him becoming a mass murderer in many peoples eyes.Being religious or an atheist has no bearing on whether you are a good person, or whether you are fit to be Prime Minister.

  • 2 weeks later...

Who had the misfortune of witnessing Ed Milibrand's bow at Prime Minister's Questions just over an hour ago, he was totally out of his depth and David Cameron literally made mincemeat of him and took him to the cleaners.
