BRENTWOOD 1 HORNCHURCH 0

Brentwood made just one change from their line up, with Anthony Ryan coming in for Petric Elbi, although Ibe Okojie appeared both on the team sheet and in the programme as Dee Okojie. Hornchurch had two of Saturday’s line up - Jamie Dormer and Jordan Collins – missing through injury, with Ross Wall, Tommy Black and Leon Hunter all returning to the starting line up. Martin Tuohy was named as substitute, John Purdie was in the squad for the first time in twelve months and Charlie Hurlock was in the squad for the first time.

Hornchurch began well, when Ross Wall was broke clear, but he put his shot over the bar. A minute later Brentwood were awarded a corner, in somewhat unusual circumstances, as the ball appeared to be at least two yards inside the field of play. Danny Dafter took the kick and Bobby Smith punched clear. Hornchurch won a corner shortly afterwards, and Jonathan Hunt played the ball short to Tommy Black, and the resulting cross was headed away by Nikki Beale. Jo Flack then broke clear in the middle but Beale came across sharply to intercept.

Hornchurch almost found a way through when Black played the ball through to Ross Wall, but Andy Hall raced out of his goal to kick clear. The ball was quickly returned into the goalmouth to Jo Flack who turned quickly but hit his shot wide of the post. Elliot Styles conceded a free kick which Ryan Doyle took, and Bobby Smith saved well from Ellis Remy’s header. Remy was then played clear and an excellent tackle by Ronnie Fletcher averted the danger.. Brentwood looked dangerous on the left and when Joao Carlos made a good run along the wing, he cut inside and sent in a good shot which Smith saved well. Two corners, both by Carlos, were punched away by Smith , and the second of these was returned across the goal where Smith saved from Remy.

Darren Blewitt conceded a corner when Billy Coyne sent Flack away on the right. Hunt floated the ball over and Hall made an excellent save from an Elliot Styles header. A further corner from Carlos came to nothing and there was no score at the interval/

Tambeson Eyong came on for James Morrish at half time, and it was Brentwood who started strongly when Smith had to clutch Carlos’ corner amid a crowd of players. Tambeson then powered down the left and won a corner, which Hunt took and a scramble resulted in front of goal, the ball eventually being cleared, and a free kick was then awarded about ten yards outside the area. Black and Hunt both lurked but it was Hunt to sent in a powerful left footed drive which skimmed the post. Elliot Styles was then penalised for a tackle and Ryan Doyle’s free kick was headed away by Elliot, and another Carlos corner was cleared by Fletcher. There was then a long delay whilst Elliot Styles was treated for a head injury, and then came an excellent chance for Hornchurch to go in front when Michael Spencer sent Tambeson away on the left and Tambeson took the ball past two wild tackles before crossing low into the middle, where there was no one in position to touch the ball home.

Martin Tuohy came on for Jo Flack and made an immediate impression as Hornchurch came forward, and when Tommy Black was brought down just a few yards from goal, the loud appeals for a penalty were ignored and no action was taken. Styles was again injured and was off the pitch for several minutes, and with Hornchurch temporarily a player short Ryan Doyle ran through on the right but hit his shot wide. Then came the best chance of the match for Hornchurch when Tommy Black carved out an opening on the left and crossed for Ross Wall, whose shot was scooped off the line. Michael Spencer then weaved through on the left and his shot was well saved by Hall. Leon Hunter combined with Eyong on the left and the ball was turned back to Spencer whose low cross reached Martin Tuohy, but his shot was blocked on the line. In stoppage time, Tommy Black was harshly penalised for a tackle and from the free kick DARREN BLEWITT came up to head the only goal of the match.

There was considerable criticism of the match officials after the match, but the fact remains that if you cannot get the ball into the net then you cannot expect to win.

The match report did not criticise the match officials, but simply reported that there was some ciriticism of them after the match.

I thought that when Tommy Black was brought down it was a certain penalty, and also that once again there was some very heavy tackles directed at Tambeson Eyong.

But if you cannot find the net, you cannot expect to win.

The large away following gave Hornchurch some loud and prolonged support last night, and I wonder if those who criticise the management and the team on other threads were really at the game, or if they are deliberately stirring things up. The easiest way is to simply ignore them. At least three of them are new posters to this forum - that says everything.

I was at the game last night and was singing all game . The fact i am a new poster is due to the fact that it was easier and quicker to create a new account than wait to unlock myself from an old account as it used to be linked to my work email

some people do not post regularly,i know many who just read the forum usually but maybe have decided to post now.We all started on here one day with our first post.

Most of the fans who have posted were quite obviously at the game last night,i am sure there may be the odd wind up merchant but i think most are genuine and it is an open forum for everyone

They did the same thing when we played them in the Trophy a few years back. There was several of their vocal fans coming out with trays full of beers!!

Some of their lot were a bit lairy but there was no trouble and there was some good banter between the two sets of fans that day and again when we played them in the league that season.

Unfortunately it's inevitable that eventually there's going to be some trouble at some point.
