Stronger than Last Season?

Recommended Posts

After 9 league games comparisons v last seasons for some “titlecontenders” (apologies to teams I have missed like Guildford & Colliers Wood are clearly also inthe mix)

Egham have 3 more points - goal difference betterby 10 goals

Chertsey have 3 morepoints - goal difference better by 1 goal

Chessington & Hook have 1 more point- goal difference better by 2 goals

Badshot Lea have same points- goal difference worse by 2 goals

Camberley have 1 less point- goal difference worse by 1 goal

Epsom & Ewell have 9 lesspoints - goal difference worse by 9 goals

Sandhurst have 11 lesspoints - goal difference worse by 16 goals

I know it's not a precise comparison - depends on who's played who etc, but nonetheless it bears out the statement that the League appears far more even this season (cue a 20 match unbeaten run by one of them)

Egham have got most of their points of Bottom 6 clubs,so unsure about them.Badshot seem to be drawing too many for my liking.Cove are live outsiders with their pitch to help.Chessington the bubbles burst already, similar to C.W.U.Sandhurst are nowhere near Championship material,Chertsey cannot comment, have not seen them play, best team by a Country mile have to be Camberley, got the best player in Matt Griffiths, and most importantly a ground good enough for promotion.Could Corinthian Casuals finally be relegated to the Combined Counties,or will the mighty F.A. move the C.C.L. Champions sideways into the Zameretto,my money's on the latter.

Colliers Wood have 8 more points - goal difference better by 20 goals

I can't compare Cove after 9 games because according to Duncs Cove last year is Camberley this year and that will confuse everyone they've only played 7 League matches but after those 7 their points tally is the same and their goal difference is 5 goals better.

THANKS SMUDGE, OUT OF THE ABOVE IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER MAY I ADD ! I JUST THINK YOU MAY WANT TO SEE THE LIKES OF BADSHOT LEA, CHERTSEY & MOLESEY WHO BEAT YOUR FAVOURITES CAMBERLEY 3-0 BEFORE PREDICTIONS ARE MADE, THEN ONCE YOU'VE SEEN THEM ALL BY ALL MEANS LETS HEAR YOUR CHAMPIONS ELECT . YOU MAY WELL BE RIGHT IN CHOOSING CAMBERLEY BUT IT'S EARLY DAYS, BUT AS I SAID ON ANOTHER THREAD, THE LEAGUE IS STARTING TO TAKE SHAPE, BUT WE ALL KNOW WHAT A GOOD RUN CAN DO, SO FOR ME IT'S WIDE OPEN AND HOPE IT REMAINS SO TO MAKE THE LEAGUE INTERESTING.

INTERESTING STATISTIC....LETS REMEMBER 9 OUT OF THE LAST 10 PREMIER CHAMPIONS HAVE ONLY LOST 4 GAMES PER SEASON, THE ONLY TEAM THAT GOT PROMOTION LOSING 7 WAS CHIPSTEAD IN 2006-2007. IF LOSING 4 WINS YOU THE LEAGUE, IT''S GOING TO BE TOUGH AS ALL TEAMS HAVE LOST 2 OR MORE EXCLUDING GUILDFORD WHO HAVE YET TO LOSE AND BADSHOT LEA LOSING 1 AND NEAR ON A 1/4 OF THE SEASON GONE FOR MOST TEAMS.

The key to the CWU season is injuries.

We, probably, have the smallest squad of CCL standard players and while some reserves can do the occasional job, we could not afford long term injuries or suspensions to our key players.

I think Smudge is being harsh when saying that any team's bubble has burst.

At the start of every season it is claimed you cant lose more than 4 games to win the league.

Looking at previous years all the teams that only lost 4 games drew an awfull lot of games.

Apart from the teams that have romped the league: ie afc, mertsham etc you can afford to lose more than

4 if you turn the draws into wins

Bedfont Green L 4 D 9 total pts 96

North Greenford L 4 D 8 total pts 98

Godalming L 3 D7 total pts 97

Chipstead L 7 D 3 total pts 99

Chipstead lost 4 more games but finished highest in the points tally

Think this year will be similar to Chipstead achievement unless anyone goes on an unbelievable run !

I reckon it will even itself out after about 15 games and in all honesty I would imagine that the top half of the table will include teams who are all capable of going toe to toe with anyone. The crunch may come when teams need to add that something extra to their squad, and that may come down to money. Chertsey got Tarpey from Hampton last season and he made a big difference to them, whilst having the likes of Agyei (?) and Pomroy on the bench and that would not come cheaply. If push comes to shove, how many of us would be able to go that extra mile to win the title. This is not a criticism of them by the way, just a fact of life. Tarpey was at Walton on loan and going great guns, but they were not really in the mix for anything, so they would probably not be looking to stretch their budget but, if they were perhaps in with a realistic chance of a play off, they may well have done so. The same may apply in the CCL this time round. Chris from CWU is correct in that a small squad with little financial resource will struggle once injuries kick in - Sam Mead is a big loss right now - and this could scupper any chance they may have. Later on in the season there will be loads of players at higher clubs who will be after games and these clubs will be drifting along and be happy to offload these to ease their budgets, so the opportunities will be there. I would like to think we could sustain a challenge with our existing squad as they are decent players and a great bunch of lads, but an injury crisis could have an effect. The other thing is that the teams in the lower half of the table also seem stronger and there are some sides who were looked on as mid-table who are actually going around and beating some of the so called fancied sides, so maybe the eventual winners will lose more games than in recent years. I think to write any team off at the moment would be foolish whilst, equally, championing a particular side when we have all averaged only 8 games the same. I know of several players who are being looked at by higher ranked clubs and, should they ultimately move upwards, how much effect will that have on a side looking to sustain a challenge. There are so many factors that could shape the season and it really could be one of many sides who prevail, but it ain't gonna be easy, for sure!
