James Morrish made his home debut, whilst Jordan Collins, signed during the week, came in for his first team debut. Jamie Dormer returned to the first team after a two month lay off due to injury. Hornchurch kicked towards the windmill end in the first half, in a match ruined by the near gale force wind and by lengthy stoppages through injury. Hornchurch started well, when Jamie Dormer picked out Billy Coyne who laid the ball forward to Martin Tuohy, whose cross was deflected by Darren Blewitt for a corner, which Jonathan Hunt floated over. The ball was part cleared to Dormer who fired his shot wide of the post. Elliot Styles fed a good pass to Jo Flack but his finish was too close to the keeper who held the ball comfortably.

The match was then held up by an injury to Jamie Dormer who needed lengthy treatment, and minutes later it was Jordan Collins who was stretched out on the field, although he was eventually able to continue. Hornchurch thought they had taken the lead in the eleventh minute when Martin Tuohy neatly headed home a Jonathan Hunt free kick, but a controversial offside was given. A Hunt first time volley from thirty yards skimmed the crossbar, whilst Michael Spencer, Billy Coyne and James Morrish linked up well to set up Jo Flack, but his header was well saved by Andy Hall.

Brentwood were rarely in the match as an attacking force, though Ibe Okojie was denied by a timely tackle from Jordan Collins. A long ball from Elliot styles almost allowed Martin Tuohy to break trough but Blewitt tackled well. Keeper Hall then made an excellent save to keep out a hard goal bound shot from Jo Flack who had homed in from the left. Close to half time Petric Elbi was booked for a bad tackle on Jordan Collins and was fortunate to remain on the pitch. Despite the many stoppages less than three minutes were added on in the first half.

Second half and Hornchurch continued to force the pace, when a Spencer cross skimmed the far post, and they almost took the lead when Tuohy nodded the ball back to Hunt whose shot was tipped around the post by Hall. Hunt swerved his corner over but the ball drifted on to the roof of the net. Brentwood wasted two free kicks in succession, the ball disappearing somewhere in the direction of the windmill, and a good interception by Ronnie Fletcher found Billy Coyne, whose through pass reached Michael Spencer, but Michael was crowded out by Nikki Beale and Ryan Doyle, and could not get any power behind his shot. A long throw from Billy Coyne was headed on by Tuohy and Beale scrambled the ball off the line.

Brentwood then wasted a corner, the ball falling neatly for Bobby Smith to gather, and then came the key moment in the second half. Remember Danny Dafter? He was fortunate to remain on the field in the pre-season match after a dreadfully late challenge on Tambeson Eyong. He gave an almost identical performance when he sent Michael Spencer crashing to the ground. Up strode the referee, and after an incredibly long period of dithering, he merely waved a yellow card. Then Dafter appeared to make a remark as he ran away, and was promptly called back again, but instead of the anticipated red, he got away with a finger wagging, to loud jeers from the knowledgeable East Side. Free kicks came thick and fast but Hornchurch could not find a way through. A Hunt corner was scrambled off the line, and when Hunt dispossessed Nikki Beale his hard drive was touched around the post. Hall then did well to hold on to Hunt’s corner under heavy pressure.

A rare opening for Brentwood was foiled when Tambeson Eyong raced back to stop Joao Carlos at the expense of a corner, and at the other end it was Eyong who played Flack clear, but Beale tackled to concede another corner, which was taken by Hunt and well caught by Hall. Flack to Spencer and back to Dormer, whose shot went just over the bar. Wall to Coyne and on to Eyong and yet another corner. Hunt found Dormer whose shot went inches wide. In the sixth minute of stoppage time Ross Wall almost found the net but keeper Hall dropped onto the ball right on the line, and Brentwood had survived for a replay.

Jordan Collins – defender - A former Ipswich Town schoolboy, Jordan was a second year professional with Ipswich, and then joined Cambridge City in 2006-07. He transferred to Cambridge Utd in the summer of 2006, and played for CRC in the Eastern Counties League. He made his Cambridge Utd debut on 26th December 2006 against Rushden & Diamonds, and went on loan to Weymouth (2008-09) and Ebbsfleet Utd (2009-10). Appearances – Cambridge Utd 2006-07 to 2008-09 six + two substitute, Weymouth 2008-09 eight + three substitute, Ebbsfleet 2009-10 fifteen + one substitute.

JAMES MORRISH: Spent three years in Chelsea’s junior scheme. Was on the books of Essex Senior League side Bethnal Green United last season and came to Hornchurch on a recommendation. Good performances for the Capital League side soon saw him making his first-team debut at Tooting on 21/9/10.

I can't edit the report, but I notice that against the Brentwood bookings there is a smiley face. I did not put them there myself and can only assume that it is something to do with the formatting. I actually wrote (B) - which is the letter B enclosed by brackets.

So apologies to anyone from Brentwood who might otherwise think that I was laughing the bookings. I most certainly was not, especially as one of them should have been a straight red.

I am also informed that he admission for Tuesday is £7 adults, £4 concessions and £ for under 16s.
