HORNCHURCH 1 REDBRIDGE 5

Michael Ramkin came on for the last half hour, marking his first appearance for almost a year, after his injury at Margate on 26th September 2009. Jon Green also made a return to the Bridge after playing for Kelvedon Hatch last season. And John Purdie again played a full 90 minutes following his injury eleven months ago against Wealdstone.

A confident start for Hornchurch, with Lewis Smith prominent in most of their moves, and it was LEWIS SMITH who opened the scoring when he ran on to a fine pass from Jon Green to drive the ball firmly home. It looked as though Hornchurch would pile up the goals, but Redbridge caught the home defence wanting when PETE SALMON crashed home the equaliser with an excellent shot on the turn from the edge of the area.

Hornchurch continued to dominate but the entire match changed on a highly controversial refereeing decision in the 35th minute. Lewis Smith had run though and cleverly chipped Tony Winston, only for the keeper to make a magnificent diving save to prevent a goal. The only problem was that he was several yards outside his area, and up went the linesman’s flag, over came Dave Axcell. Only one decision was possible – a straight red – but, after a long period of hesitation, a yellow card was waved instead, and Redbridge still had a goalkeeper on the field. The free kick came to nothing and although Hornchurch continued to press, they could not penetrate the packed Redbridge defence.

Jamie Southon came on after the interval, and for a time Hornchurch continued to threaten, but ten minutes nto the half CHRIS LOCKWOOD put Redbridge ahead with a well taken penalty following a mistimed tackle, and four minutes later MATTHEW GILLINGHAM fired in a shot from the left, Michael Bowditch left it, possibly thinking it was going wide, and the ball ended up in the net. Michael Ramkin and Lewis Smith went close, but it became four one when MICHAEL BLAUSSAINT finished off a solo run from the half way line with a well placed shot. And with the final kick of the match BILLY RAINFORD ran on to a good pass from the left to neatly slot the ball home.
