TOOTING & MITCHAM 1 HORNCHURCH 1

Despite playing on until half time against Hendon, Rickie Hayles had twice dislocated his shoulder during that match was unable to play tonight, with Ronnie Fletcher coming in at centre half. Keeper Ollie Morris-Sanders has now been recalled by Braintree, and Bobby Smith was in goal to make his league debut. With other long term injuries, it was a much changed Hornchurch team that appeared at Tooting’s New Sandy Lane ground. James Morrish, who has impressed in Capital League matches after last season playing for Bethnal Green Utd in the Essex Senior League, came in for his first team debut, and Martin Tuohy and Leon Hunter came into the starting line up.

Tooting played in black and white stripes and Hornchurch were in blue and white stripes. Both teams had plain white backs to the strip, both were in dark shorts and the net result was total farce, with misplaced passes, hesitant decisions, as officials and players struggled to pick out who played for who. Max described it as the Muppet Show, but Fred Karno would be closer. The easiest way to recognise who played for who was that Tooting were the team in red socks and black boots.

With the colour clash, it took several minutes for spectators to sort out which team was kicking in which direction, and when Tooting made the first move of the match, with Bobby Smith catching the resulting cross, many Urchins supporters were still deciding which end to stand at. Hornchurch took some time to settle with their much changed line up but a Jonathan Hunt free kick, after Tambeson Eyong had been fouled as he raced down the left wing, reached Elliot Styles, who could not get sufficient direction on his header. Tooting replied with a corner which Ronnie Fletcher hooked away, and the ball was quickly played out to the left, where Jo Flack outpaced his marker and homed in on goal. Keeper Jamie Butler came out sharply and just managed to kick clear.

There were some anxious moments for Hornchurch when Jason Henry broke clear, and Bobby Smith collided with Michael Spencer on the edge of the area before the ball went out for a corner, but Michael needed lengthy attention from Dickie Harper before eventually being able to continue. Tooting took the lead when a free kick was awarded on the right side and the ball was floated over, above the defence, and against the post. It rebounded and a delighted PHILLIP WILLIAMS reacted quickly to poke the ball into the net.

At this stage Hornchurch looked in disarray, though the ridiculous colour clash did not help, especially as offside decisions were a bit of a lottery. James Morrish, playing confidently in midfield, sent an excellent through pass to Jo Flack but the resulting cross went over the bar. Tambeson Eyong then took a quick pass from the dominant Jonathan Hunt and raced goalwards, only to be tackled by Hassan Nyang right on the edge of the area. Billy Coyne to James Morrish, inside to Leon Hunter, whose cross was diverted for a corner. Hunt took the kick, and the ball came back out to Hunt whose hard drive hit a defender and bounced out to safety. A long throw by Billy Coyne was then flicked on by Flack to Eyong, whose header was well saved by butler. Hornchurch levelled when Bobby Smith’s long clearance was touched on to Jo Flack who raced goalwards and was scythed down well inside the area. Penalty. Up stepped JONATHAN HUNT to hammer the ball left footed into the net.

And a minute later it was almost two when Hunt crashed in a shot from the edge of the area which skimmed the bar. Then it was Hunt to Coyne and on to Martin Tuohy, whose shot was turned out for a corner. Hornchurch slowly began to force the pace, though many passes went astray and ended up at a player with red socks. Close to half time Bobby Smith did well to punch away a corner under heavy pressure.

Tooting started the second half strongly when Monty Gimpel made a long run on the right wing, and it took a well timed interception by Leon Hunter to avert the danger. A similar move at the other end came when Billy Coyne played a good ball through to Jo Flack, whose shot was deflected out for a corner. Many thought Hornchurch had scored when Flack put Martin Tuohy clear on the left but Martin’s shot hit the side netting.

Tooting had a good chance when James Evans sent over a well flighted free kick and Ron Haworth’s well placed shot looked a certain goal until Bobby Smith flung himself across goal to divert the ball around the post. At the other end a Hunt free kick was equally well flighted and the ball fell invitingly to Jo Flack who turned sharply and crashed his shot against the inside of the post. The ball rebounded out to Tambeson Eyong, whose follow up volley went inches over the bar.

Ross Wall came on for Martin Tuohy, and Lewis Smith for Jonathan Hunt, but it was Tooting who came back with a corner, which Fletcher comfortably cleared. Hornchurch thought they had scored shortly afterwards when Leon Hunter sent a free kick across goal, and Jo Flack hammered the ball into the net, but offside was given. And it was Flack once again who ran on to a Morrish pass and homed in on goal but Butler moved out of goal quickly and did well to smother the shot. Tommy Black came on for Eyong and almost scored the winning goal in the third minute of the three minutes added on for stoppages when he was first to Leon Hunter’s centre, and his shot rose a fraction to high and went over the bar.

In the fifth minute of the three minutes added on, and with the Hornchurch bench doing a passable imitation of Arsene Wenger, Tooting, who had been under heavy pressure, almost won the match when a long clearance, harmless enough, turned into near disaster when Elliot Styles slipped over and a player in red socks went racing goalwards with no one to stop him. The player (name withheld to avoid acute embarrassment) ran on, out came Bobby Smith, and the ball from thirty yards out was lofted over the keeper. Not only did it miss the goal, it also curled back and went out for a throw in ten yards from the far touch line. At this point the referee decided that five minutes was more than enough for three minutes stoppages, and blew the whistle for full time.

One point gained? No, it was definitely two points lost, but a second half performance which left the masses of away support in good spirits with a hint of what will come once the goals start flowing again.

There is a precedent for teams changing their strip once the match has commenced, as in 1958 Tooting turned up at Ilford in black and white stripes, whilst Ilford (the old Ilford, not the new one) were in blue and white hoops. Both teams had clashing shorts and socks and after less than ten minutes the referee halted play, and Tooting had to change their colours. As there was no floodlighting in those days, this meant that the match finished in near darkness due to the twenty minute hold up. The only other time this has happened was in the Eastern Counties League, when Romford (the old one, not the new one), who were in blue and gold thirds, were at home to Newmarket, who were in red and green halves. The away team came out in red with white sleeves (Arsenal style) after hundreds of spectators staged a demonstration at the interval.

And although unconnected with this match, congratulations to Frankie Williams who scored six goals on Sunday for the youth team who beat Tokyngton Manor but seventeen nil, (not sixteen as incorrectly reported on Sunday).

"Keeper Ollie Morris-Sanders has now been recalled by Braintree"

No he hasn't, he has signed for Heybridge Swifts.

"the ball fell invitingly to Jo Flack who turned sharply and crashed his shot against the inside of the post"

Flack nodded the ball on to Tuohy, who hit the post.

Somebody should tell the EJA then as they have the score as 16-0 on their results page.

Also, last night's attendance is shown as 138 on the Ryman site - the same figure which came up on the Vidiprinter.

Sorry Kel - I only reported on what was told to me last night by a very reliable source. I would agree with you - Bobby played very well last night.

I have Jo Flack down in my notes.

think it is harsh too

lets face it for 2 years now behcet has been a very good goalie, the last few months he has made some silly errors, and i am sure he would be the first to admit it.But we and others in this league are ryman premier sides, not premier league sides, ollie was a good keeper for us but also made mistakes, had he stayed with us for two years i am sure he would of made the same or more errors.

The same can be said for dale, for 2 years he was cracking, towards the end he made some silly errors too,if you think you are going to get much better than darren or dale then forget it unless you want to pay a grand or so a week for a keeper who lets face it probably wouldnt want to play at this level

2 many errors! Not good enough for this level. Bobby Smith has looked very impressive after the 2 games I have seen him play. Long may he continue

Seen Behcet a couple of times and he's a decent keeper. Not as good as James Russell though
