Observation

Before season 2006/07 there was never an issue regarding budgets, as far as I am aware teams paid expenses, and that’s all, Apart from the two seasons AFC Wimbledon, were in the CCL.

When clubs came across, from the old Ryman’s 2, in 2006 that’s when budgets started to rear its head.

That season I got the impression that these clubs thought they were dropping down a division, rather than moving across.

It’s also interesting to note that since then, with all their decent budgets, they have only won 1 trophy, Camberley League Cup.

So come on Wembley, Banstead, Camberley, Chertsey, Egham, Dorking, Epsom & Ewell, let’s see if you can win the title this year.

Not knocking these clubs, just an observation, I’ve got my own views on why big money clubs haven’t won the CCL title let’s have some of yours.

In my opinion if your known as a " big money club" it is very easy to attract players who are there for just the money and nothing else.

Having been at clubs and witnessed this, it can cause a big problem. Lack of desire, lack of effort and no team spirit.

Put them 3 together and you win nothing. I would also say that a big budget in the wrong hands is a recipe for disaster.

You might have money but if you dont have player knowledge, tactical know how and good man managment

then again you win nothing.

The only time this can work is if the money is that ridiculous that you will attract the best from much higher levels and they may just win you something on talent alone.

I think the best managers come from a background of none or little budget learning their trade and then find themselves with a budget to work with.

Whilst were on the subject can i please put to bed this rumour of Egham offering big money. Trust me i have signed every player at the club and although yes we do pay expenses it is not in the region of some of the "comments" i have seen on on here !

Dont know about other managers but when i sign a player and the first thing he mentions is money it puts me right of !

COME ON STEVE LETS BE REAL HERE, POMROY AIN''T CHEAP NEITHER ARE YOUR OTHER STRIKERS,NOR WOULD I IMAGINE THAT NOAD IS CHEAP EITHER. FOULSER CAN BE IN THEIR BRACKET AS WELL. EGHAM CERTAINLY HASN'T THE LOWEST BUDGET THATS FOR SURE....JUST BE HONEST !

I am being real. At what point have i said Egham have the lowest budget ?

The players you have mentioned are worth what their paid and if they went to another club would get more. (fact)

It just does my head in that the teams/managers/supporters who have no or little budget keep bleating on about it and blame the clubs that do. (except Sandhurst)

It also seems to be these clubs that start the rumours about what players are earning

What should we do refuse to pay anyone so we dont upset any other club.

The quicker people except it the better. If these clubs had someone offer them a healthy sum for players every week they would bite there arm of for it (hypocrites spring to mind!)

Anyway rant over.

PS:I have many faults but honesty is not one of them

Apart from thinking that Steve is not saying what he means with that postscript (I would prefer to read that as "dishonesty" not being one of his faults), money has always been a problem. We at Egham had it in the early 90s when we were a damned good club with excellent players, but loyalty bonuses and other such cr*p reared their ugly heads (one brilliantly talented forward, for instance, saying, during a particularly fractious game at Hemel Hempstead, that he would wait until he got a new pair of boots from the club and then he would be off!) We still see him occasionally, around Ash and last season at Farnborough for the Badshot Lea game. I cannot blame him, though. Sometimes, of course, this comes not from the players but from clubs themselves, ready to pay Joe Bloggs £xx more than that club down the road, and most players, I would guess, would at least be tempted. I remember Bracknell Town nicking Bradley Pratt,, a towering centre half, off us in the mid 80s for a few quid more than we were paying him, which I was told was £18 a week. At Egham, though, one of the main points we supporters (we hardy, sometimes foolhardy, few) noticed was that Steve Baker was able to hold on to all of last season's players bar Lee Pearce, and add John Pomroy to the squad as well. (OK, one of those, whose signature was apparently the first taken pre-season, has noiw left, by the less than impressive method of texting Baker instead of telling him face to face. I am sure you know who he is by now. Perhaps he would have felt better had he not missed two sitters against Guildford iin the Cup.) We have a good set of players at the club, and for the first time in ages we have players, such as the aforementioned Adam Foulser, who are in their 4th season with us. I doubt it is for the money.

Fizzer - the problem these days is the general cost of living as well. You mention clubs paying maybe £20-£30 a week, which is not much in itself. We played Ash away on Saturday, home to South park Tuesday and trained last night. A lad living in Sutton travelling to all of these may have done something in the region of 50 miles all told, maybe more. We pay 40p per mile at work, so that already equates to £20, so little left over from even £30. Travel will fluctuate around our squad, as some live really close and others further away, so I have used Sutton as a good average. We would love to have all local boys playing, but that does not happen that often. We are in an area where there are loads of good non league clubs, like many others, so there is stiff competition. So, the £30 mentioned does not seem excessive and over the period of a season would seem an acceptable sum if the club can afford it. However, we used 14 players at Ash and, with injuries and work, another 4 on Tuesday. If we pay them all this sum it comes to £540. This is deemed a top six budget, but if it is what we are paying, it is just a reasonable return for the cost of playing in the CCL. Now, I am not giving a sob story on behalf of players because as I have said previously, I do it all for nothing like most of us I would imagine. You will be exactly the same as me, probably involved in some form of football most nights, watching games, phoning around, planning all sorts, so we do it for the love and, in truth, because we cannot get out on the pitch and do it ourselves any more - not at a competitive level anyway. Players can get a game anywhere and drop a level with their mates but not be expected to train, so £20-£30 to do three sessions a week and often travelling distances midweek has no attraction. If we draw tomorrow, we will be going down to the New Forest on Tuesday and will need to leave about 4.30 - 5.00. If not, and I hope that is the case and we win, we play at home to you. The former would almost certainly mean not all of our lads could make the trip so, once again, we would have to draft others in and thus increase the amount of players used. I don't really know the answer and I do not begrudge players getting money, but you do hear of many players getting ridiculous sums of money to play in this league and, if that is the case and my calculations are right, there could be clubs paying £1,500 - £2,000 a week. I know this argument will be shot down by some who will say any money is too much, but the reality is that it is a fact of life in football now and does dictate a lot of who plays at which club. I had a conversation with someone the other day about a player, and know for a fact that this is kosher, but the view was he was not that bothered about playing at the moment but may well consider it if the right offer came along and, when I asked a figure, it was £80 - £100! The truth is, he may well get that, so good luck to him. We have a great bunch of lads at Molesey and I really enjoy working with them but also recall the Virginia Water days - cue Jurg to come on all emotional - and no money changed hands apart from them paying fines and the bar serving drinks. I was given £50 to do the job, which went on my phone bill, petrol and £30 behind the bar every Saturday at the club after a game - good times as well. Anyway, not a winge, we all know where we stand from the outset, so we just get on with it and, as you say, greater satisfaction comes when you know success comes from sheer graft and ability.

Manager50, good post and agree with you 100%.....football at this level takes a lot of commitment and personal expense and that should not be forgotten. And the majority of us are in it for the right reasons which is our love of the game.

Good luck tomorrow, hopefully we'll both get a win and can look forward to another good game as always over at your place on Tuesday night.....must be your turn to beat us?! ;o)

Harsh, Fizzer, harsh........................ but true!

We'll try our best but with 35 injured players and prior knowledge already that the referee and assistants will be from Sandhurst, plus the fact that you have been lucky on every occasion, even the 4-0 trouncing last season, I feel confident that I have sufficient excuses up my sleeve to cover a defeat. Plus your well know £3,000 a week budget and we really will be looking at damage limitation. Look forward to seeing you - hopefully on the back of a win each - plus DT10. Best of luck to you, and all the CCL clubs in action tomorrow!
