HORNCHURCH 8 OXHEY JETS 2

Hornchurch kicked towards the windmill end in the first half and dominated play for the first fifteen minutes, but without really looking threatening. A Lewis Smith cross was pumped away by Steve Brown, and the closest to a goal came when Jonathan Hunt’s corner was half cleared by Wayne Gladdy, and Elliot Styles followed up with a long range header which keeper Sam Styles saved comfortably. A long throw by Billy Coyne was cleared by Bywater and an even longer throw from Rickie Hayles went across goal and out to the other wing with no one getting anywhere near to the ball, before Chris Ingham powered the ball away.

With Jonathan Hunt in total control in midfield, and Tommy Black performing a similar role on the left side, Urchins threatened to overwhelm the visitors, but Jets then took the lead when IAN BYWATER hooked the ball home after the home defence had failed to clear a well flighted free kick, and what many thought was an easy home win suddenly turned into a potential banana skin match, with the real banana skin lying teasingly on the running track just a yard from the half way line. Jets began to dictate play and a long clearance from Sam Styles found Lee Armitt whose first time lob drifted dangerously close to the goal. Jets continued to come forward but Andrew Lomas felled with a very late tackle and escaped with a yellow card. Rickie Hayles. Elliot Styles then conceded a free kick and Lomas saw his dangerous centre punched away by Bobby Smith. Hornchurch regained some of their earlier poise when Tommy Black fired a shot close to the post and Dave McSweeney sent Jamie Richards clear on the right, only for Jamie to hit his shot wide.

A Jo Flack cross was turned out by Lee Grace for a corner and Hunt floated the ball over to Styles, whose header went out for another corner. This one was taken by Tommy Black who picked out Hunt, whose first time shot rebounded off of Steve Brown. Two minutes before the interval, Hornchurch were awarded a free kick out on the left. Tommy Black lurked, but it was Jonathan Hunt who stepped up to flight the ball into the goalmouth for RICKIE HAYLES to head home.

Half time, and Jim McFarlane was decidedly unhappy and a blazing half time lecture ensured that Hornchurch came out with all guns blazing under a blazing hot sun. Hunt to Black, and it to Jo Flack, who blazed the ball high over the bar, narrowly missing the massed ranks of spectators on Hasbeen Hill. Hunt again, this time finding Jamie Richards, but Chris Harding cleared. Hunt yet again, this time taking a free kick which Elliot Styles headed over. Hunt then sent Flack clear and keeper Sam Styles saved with his legs, the ball bouncing out for a throw. Billy Coyne threw the ball deep into the area and JO FLACK was in perfect position to hammer the ball home to give Hornchurch the lead.

Black sent Michael Spencer clear on the left but Michael’s cross went begging across goal, but the pressure was non stop, and JO FLACK made it three with a magnificent solo run which culminated with an unstoppable shot. Tambeson Eyong came on to create his unique brand of havoc on the right, and Urchins were denied a penalty when Tommy Black was scythed down as he raced towards goal from the left wing, the referee being content with awarding a corner, which Hunt floated over and keeper Sam Styles caught. Flack nearly scored again when he got on to the end of a Hunt free kick, and Elliot Styles nearly found the net when he collided heavily with keeper Sam Styles, the ball bouncing out with Chris Ingham finally clearing.

Both teams could have been reduced to ten players when Lee Armitt followed through very late on Bobby Smith, who retaliated, but the incident was missed by the match officials, and both players escaped with a lengthy lecture from the referee. Jets then nearly scored with a free kick, which Ingham pumped deep into the goalmouth, and Bobby Smith did well to hold the ball under heavy pressure. Bobby Smith quickly threw the ball out to Billy Coyne, thence on inevitably to Jonathan Hunt, who opened up the Jets defence to square the ball for JO FLACK to net his third goal of the match.

Flack went close again before Tam Eyong thundered through several defenders to crash his shot against the underside of the bar, the ball being cleared for a corner. Tommy Black took the corner and LEWIS SMITH headed home. Lewis Smith created the next goal with a weaving run before being felled by Steve Brown and JONATHAN HUNT calmly stepped up to hammer home the resulting penalty. A Martin Tuohy shot was punched away by Sam Styles, Billy Coyne returned the ball and ROSS WALL headed home. Ross went close to scoring again when he headed Spencer’s centre onto the bar, and Sam Styles twice made good catches from Jonathan Hunt corners.

Wall to Black and Tommy shot wide. Black picked out Hunt in the middle and Jonathan’s shot went for another corner. Hunt then crashed a shot against the post and out for another corner. Hunt took the kick and the ball was returned to Hunt whose cross was headed home by RICKIE HAYLES. But the Jets never gave up and in stoppage time they won a corner. Up came keeper SAM STYLES, over came the ball, two goalkeepers rose high in the air and it was the visiting keeper whose header looped into the net, to become only the second goalkeeper to score in the FA Cup in open play.
