Koran Burning Day - 11 September (9/11)

Recommended Posts

Members will have heard the news that Pastor Terry Jones, who leads a congregation of some 50 loyal followers at the Dove World Outreach Centre in Gainesville, Florida has laid plans for a so called "International Burn-a-Koran Day" for Saturday which, incase you had not noticed, is 11 September (9/11) and the ninth anniversary of the worst act of terrorism the World has known claiming 2,977 innocent victims and injuring more than 6,000. I was just curious to know what members felt about Pastor Jones's initiative and whether you are in agreement, I see that his actions have been condemned in certain quarters and President Obama has called the plan 'a stunt' and 'a recruitment bonanza for Al Qaida' which seems an over reaction. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair called the act 'disrespectful' and urged people 'to read the Koran not burn it' and current Prime Minister David Cameron said that he 'strongly opposed any attempt to offend members of a religious group'.

Not say of this is right or wrong but......

My only question is....

If a Muslim group burnt a bible would it a) be condemned by the world or B) even be worthy of a column in a newspaper or c) just ignored by everyone and dismissed as something they tend to do.

As many Muslims are super sensitive about this sort of thing, and as a result innocent lives will be put at risk by the actions of Pastor Terry Jones, who is obviously an attention seeking, ego manic fruitcake, so of course it wrong.

Rhodes comment that 9/11 was the worse act of terrorism that the world has ever seen well meant but probably slightly incorrect as the holocaust and Blair and Bushes illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could be considered far worse.

Wot's your view Rhodesly?

Loosely - Why are you suddenly so interested in my view when you have never taken any notice of it before

Why are you being so childish Rhodesly?

Don't you have a view of your own? Are you too frightened to say where you stand on this?

Further to my post yesterday to start off this thread, Pastor Jones has surprisingly backed down following pressure from President Obama and other Political and Religious leaders around the World including the Vatican, the Commander of International Forces in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and Interpol urging the respected Minister to reconsider his decision. The US State Department had even issued a travel alert to American citizens travelling overseas, urging them to avoid any areas where protests over the planned Koran burning might occur. Pakistan had asked Interpol to intervene and the US’s Foreign Office had described the plans as ‘shameful and against any religion’. Pastor Jones had previously insisted that he would go ahead with his 'International Burn-a-Koran Day' despite receiving more than 100 death threats, his loyal followers had been posting copies of the Koran to the Dove World Outreach Centre in Gainsville, Florida to put on the bonfire tomorrow however I understand that the plans have merely been put on hold and the burning will still happen in the not too distant future.

One lunatics thoughtless ramblings have made headlines all around the world, and insulted millions of Muslims, for probably no other reason than to increase Pastor Jones congregation. Even Max Clifford couldn't have done a better job and it will be interesting to see the size of his flock on Sunday.

While its fair to say that religion has been responsible for more wars than anything else, surely its only right and proper that peoples beliefs are respected, including those like myself who believe that the bible in all its forms is nothing more than superstitious nonsense.

Loosely - I still don't know why you are so interested as you have never valued my opinion previously however it should go without saying where I stand on the subject

You are right Rhodesly - I couldn't care less what you think, mainly because you don't. And no, it doesn't go without saying where you stand on the subject. After all, you haven't said, have you?

I see that Home Secretary , Theresa May, is under pressure to ban Pastor Terry Jones from speaking at an 'English Defence League' rally in Luton in February about 'the evils of Islam'. The controversial anti-Muslim American Preacher who threatened to burn copies of the Koran on the ninth anniversary of 9/11 is, once again, at the centre of a Political storm after he readily agreed to address Far Right activists in the Bedfordshire town. The Home Secretary has the power to exclude an individual from the Country if she thinks their presence here could threaten public order or safety however surely this would be a very un-democratic move in a Country such as our own who prides itself on free speech.

There is no "Right to Free Speech" in this country Rhodes. You'll need to get a plane to the USA for that. There is no right to incite racial hatred or violence in this country either and I suspect that Theresa May is just doing the sensible thing by preventing potential crime, it's what a good Home Secretary does with foreign nationals. You see Rhodes, our forefathers fought for the principle that people should live in peace or at least have the protection to do so.

It is right that the bloke be refused entry, but only right when citizens of ours, whose parents have come to this country are arrested and tried for causing the same level of hatred against the united kingdom, however much we laugh them off for what we just perceive as idiotic behaviour

Do we know whether Pastor Terry Jones was allowed into the Country and, if so, did he speak at the rally in Luton last month, I didn't read anything about it in the press

An interesting article that puts Pastor Terry Jones's actions very much into perspective, this was simply an old man, possibly a little eccentric, and Pastor of the tiny Trinity United Methodist Church congregation, of just fifty members, in Gainsville, Florida who rightly or wrongly announced plans to burn the Quran on the ninth anniversary of the September 11 atrocity which Jones called 'International Burn a Quran Day':
