Positioning and rapport

Hi all,

http://extricate.org/2010/09/06/positioning-and-rapport-keeping-on-the-right-side-of-players/

We all know players love each other and in particular the match officials they get. This article talks about the referee building good rapport with players.... Be that a friendly chat, a quiet word, a stern rebuke or giving them their marching orders.

It's interesting as there are some psychology aspects to be considered (these are linked in the article). For example: Some people have a best or worst side... Giving them advice from one direction will be better received than the other!

I'm curious as to what you have seen where rapport has really worked between players, match officials... whoever! What works for you? Has anything NOT worked and you regret? Did the referee once hug your goalkeeper and he hasn't been the same since?

I think we've established on here before that officials who LISTEN are always going to be appreciated, but I'm after your 'secret sauce'...

We had a guy called Mo who refereed our FA Cup match against Walton and Hersham. Got let down by his assistants, but he had a good game. Was prepared to talk to the players and explain his decisions and did not adopt an aggresive approach which the players responsed to in a good way. What impressed me most was when a player required treatment I went to talk to some of my teammates and Mo noticed this and did not restart play until I was back in my goal.
