Swearing

Recommended Posts

Not only the officials that are spineless. I dont see many clubs doing the slightest about it either. Most have rules in their programme about ejecting people who use abusive language. I hear it at games and I never in 25 years of watching football at this level have I seen anyone ejected from a ground. It is something we need to tackle together but as with most things it is just easier to blame someone else.

Fully agree Kroons, if clubs made more of an effort to abide by their rules and the officials take the correct action when it's aimed at themselves or another player things would improve. If anything I think it has got worse in the last few seasons as the officials are told to check the under garments are the same colour yet you still see players from the very top to the lower league with different colours on, daft rule, crack down on the one's that make the game more appealing to families and you might get a few more through the gate.

Well said Teffs.

I know my attending GD's are of an age when they can possibly accept hearing abusive foul language, but I have to say I have felt quite embarrassed when standing talking to your young son and heir, (NOTE- NOT hair),at Meadowbank and hearing players venting their spleens with the most offensive language.

That's my point YV - who determines whether it's a more aggressive word - who determines the "ranking" as you put it.

If the person on the receiving end of the word isn't offended, then is it an offensive word?

Why isn't say "toad" the nastiest most foul-mouthed word in the English language?

I can't really come up with a logical answer other than it has always been that way........................

Except it hasn't. The c word used to be a perfectly correct anatomical description but the meaning behind it has changed over time. Therefore I'm not too bothered about the use of the word in respect of frustration at oneself or a teammate but I agree that a ref shouldn't be subject to abuse. I have seen refs take exception to very mild cussing though before.

What's your view of swearing in CCFL games?

It's an open question. I've worked with referees with different tolerances on this and really just after how YOU feel it should be 'policed', if at all.

(Declaration of interest: I'm writing a blog article about this topic so particularly interested in what you all have to say!)

Tristan what are your views on the subject?

The problem is that CCL officials don't do anything about swearing.

It's been mentioned a few times amongst groundhoppers that they can't believe what CCL and other south eastern league's refs will let go. It's certainly different in other step 5 leagues around the country - in those the refs have the balls to do something about it - our officials are spineless.

VPCTFC, Ref you got no balls, your spineless.Would that get you a Booking? Not offensive surely.

I put my general thoughts in my blog: http://extricate.org/2010/08/31/minding-the-language/

To sum that up, any 'harsh' language towards me I am taking action against, no question.  I feel I have been softer on other on the pitch language though.  Shouts of frustration are one thing, but I think there is a limit when we find the 'C' word being shouted full volume from an annoyed keeper to his back four.  It's that sort of thing I'm going to start trying to take action against... quite how that will work we will soon see !!

Being on the edges of Ladies football, I thought I'd tentatively broach the subject with the newly formed DLFC.

To a man, (woman), they abhor the use of the 'C' word, not because it is deemed a swear-word, but because they see it as an abusive term for part of their anatomy.

They will occasionally utter the 'F' word, but usually only in frustration at their own game-play.

May be this might throw some light in the direction of Merc

Not really sure why it is an 'abusive' term for a part of their anatomy! It's not nice to be called one or hear it shouted out a lot, but I don't really get that to be honest.

Having said all that, I did laugh today when I saw a reworking of the 'Webuyanycar.com' advert jingle for 'big-spending' Man City. You can probably guess the word which replaced 'car', but it was cleverly done. Although i'd be tempted to rework it for Crawley myself......

I agree with both statements, but at this level there are no stewards to monitor the crowd.

Swearing at the ref is the 1 that gets me,book the player straight away, job done.

We had a ref at the weekend who told the players to F£"k offf and get the F--k up !! Which I think poo's all over the respect campaign..........

MEWY when you say your going to work on that one now, i think thats where the problems lie. as that implies, that you have let it go in the past. you mentioned you had the same team a few weeks on the trot. the next time they have you, will they have a consistant official?coffee%20%282%29.gif

Just to elaborate slightly. The girls know that men find it highly offensive to be called a vagina - After all, It's the 'Woman are from Venus - Man are from.....' syndrome. Therefore they find it even more offensive to themselves that a personal part of their anatomy is likened to a male. It makes sense to me.

And on an up-and up note......

On the demise of HTLFC and the forming of DLFC, there was a squad of 18 Ladies training at Meadowbank last night.

Onwards and Upward !!

Twat, c.ock, prat and many many more swear words are references to parts of the anatomy,, usualy genetalia, that's the whole point of them. If you called someone a knee or a shoulder, it doesn't quite have the same comedy impact.
