Swearing

What's your view of swearing in CCFL games?

It's an open question.  I've worked with referees with different tolerances on this and really just after how YOU feel it should be 'policed', if at all.

(Declaration of interest: I'm writing a blog article about this topic so particularly interested in what you all have to say!)

I think it mainly depends on who the swearing is directed at.

If it is at a team-mate for a mistake then most words excusable - never feel the "C" word has a place though whatever the circumstances.

If it is between Management and his own player ( the Cove winger yesterday was heard shouting back at Koo or his Asst "Shut the f*ck up" after being criticised for losing possession) then again the Ref should be tolerant giving due consideration to the circumstances. (Incidently, not surprisingly that player was subbed by Koo within 2 minutes of his outburst)

If it is directed at the Ref then zero tolerance - book the offender for dissent / send him off for using Foul & Abusive / Offensive Language.

Might be a few abandoned games due to lack of sufficient players on pitch but swearing directly at the Official, however good or bad his decisions appear to be on the day, has to be stamped out. Just my opinion of course coffee%20(2).gif

It was interesting. When I went for the coin toss yesterday, the opposition captain asked the referee's stance on swearing in frustration. Quite simply the referee said as long as it was not directed at him or his assistants it should not be a problem, but he would take it case by case if it was too loud.

The Carrot Crunchers league have decided that when the teamsheets are exchanged, a member of the bench and the captain from both sides should be present as well. I have only experienced it for one game so far as this tosh was is not required for the FA Cup, but all the referee said was exactly the same as what he said for the coin toss. I don't mind seeing the referee before the game, but they should bring the teamsheet exchange forward to an hour before kick off so that the captains' warm ups are not interrupted!

I think the question you should be asking is more along the lines of 'Do you think swearing should be tolerated at any level game? - not just CCL games.

Would you be happy taking a young child to a game to have to stand on the touchline (ok, behind the barrier) for them to have to listen to such language. Call me old fashioned but I do not believe that open swearing should be allowed at all.

I understand that if a player misses an open goal he may be a tad upset with himself and as a referee - I would probably not hear that - but - it a defensive player was screaming at another player for whatever reason, that would warrant a quiet word. If it persisted then another word along with the captain and if it happened again - in the book.

I have watched my own son play youth football and refereed some youth football at U14 and have had to send a player off for calling me a C**** at that age. (I may well have deserved it but it was not for hm to tell me openly on the FOP) If referees cannot manage it at the lower age groups - what hope is there when they reach step 4,5 or 6 football.

TC I understand the Wessex League did that but may have dropped it after a game.

Swearing is a very controversial subject within football. I am neither a C*** or a Cheat and will send off players for calling me either. Everything else will depend on the circumstances on how, where and when it is said.

I think most people would say that swearing is not accceptable and should not be tolerated, however it is there and always will be.

Most swearing is born of frustration from players when things don't go right, for example 'for F***s sake' is a favorite when blazing the ball over the bar or the opposition score.

It comes down to what should be tolerated. As long as it is not shouted out load, accross the field or directed at the officials it should be okay. The 'C' word is an aggresive insult and should never be tolerated, in my opinion.

Kids are often at games, including mine, and people do not consider them at all. However I know it will happen and let them know that it is wrong when it does.

How do you stop the over enthusiatic supporters, I have heard more swearing from them than the players at many games. Age old traditions of swearing 'The Referee's a W' and 'Ohhhhhh, your s**t ahhh' would need to be eradicated or the officials could try and remove them from the ground .

Sensible tolerance of adult language is the bottom line. Players will swear, but it should be contained, if not, dealt with.

Mewcenary, if it's aimed at you then I'm all for it! I believe within my first sentance to you were the words of 'are the lights too bright for you to see and is there any danger in you keeping up or shall I play AND do your job'

Swearing at any person, be it an official, opponent or team mate is un-called for and should be open to punishment.

Players that 'swear' at themselves for their own errors should be ignored unless it is screamed out for everyone in the ground to hear.

How can we expect the youth of today to play the game with respect when they hear the 'C' and 'F' word being used on the pitch by their peers ?

Completely agree that there is no place for the C word in any walk of life. Also agree with calling an official a cheat as I found out to my cost a few years ago.

Why is it that we think of the "C" word as such an objectionable word. It is after all, just another word.

Who determined it is any worse to call someone one of them than say a "muppet" ?

Can't Understand Normal Thinking grin.gif

What would you prefer then GF, if someone, not me of course, called you a 'fanny' or a 'c'. They are both the same thing however the expletive is a more aggressive form. So called swear words are all a form of aggression in my eyes but if you had to rank them in a pole most people would put the 'c' word top.

That's my point YV - who determines whether it's a more aggressive word - who determines the "ranking" as you put it.

If the person on the receiving end of the word isn't offended, then is it an offensive word?

Why isn't say "toad" the nastiest most foul-mouthed word in the English language?

I can't really come up with a logical answer other than it has always been that way........................

I guess your right GF, it is how you would determine it and it is what we have always known, I think the majority would rank it highly. It is the same as the 'n' word which I find totally unacceptable however it is accepted in some social circles, not mine.

The problem is that CCL officials don't do anything about swearing.

It's been mentioned a few times amongst groundhoppers that they can't believe what CCL and other south eastern league's refs will let go. It's certainly different in other step 5 leagues around the country - in those the refs have the balls to do something about it - our officials are spineless.

i agree that the ccl refs seem to tolerate swearing. was at 2 games this weekend, and was shocked at the amount of abuse that the officials took. but then booked for silly nudges. it must never be allowed, swearing at officials, tell the players before the game. and stick to it. they will soon learn if we are consistant.coffee%20%282%29.gif
