The long Throw & Corner kicks

How many corners & long throws did we have yesterday? Not sure of the exact amount but there were quite a few yet all, except for the odd one or two, did we make full use of them. It's been like that for a while now too.

Ok,the guys line up at the edge of the area waiting to pounce but in most cases they fail to outjump a defence.

(Saunders the exception).

The long throw is as good as a pass but something different, sometimes, might make a defence think twice about how to defend them.

As it is they seem to be eating up all these throw-ins & corners with apparrent ease which is a shame as they could be & should be a major weapon in our armery.

Work needed on the training ground I think to make full & better use of these.Your personal thoughts please!

I said this last season Tony. Most teams do their homework and know Lacey has a long throw on him and so pack the box with players. We never seem to be able to take advantage of it, and I can't think of a time when we have scored. In one match last season Lacey started on long throws but then mixed it with short throws which appeared to give us more options.

On another point, how many times did Turner play the short ball yesterday and immediately put players under pressure. I counted at least 5 times, and on two occasions when he released it to Osborne, he was disposessed, and only a great tackle prevented a breakaway goal. If he's going to do this he needs to remember that the player needs time to turn and release the ball before an opposition player gets to him, or alternatively throw the ball in front of him to run on to it. I don't want to appear negative because it shows that the players want to keep it on the ground and play the ball, rather than hoofing it up the field.

I agree, Jamie was throwing out quickly and the recipients were not clear enough to receive the ball, and bring it forward .. getting dispossessed and having to scramble back to get the ball hoofed forward - as MargateShot says it's good we're trying to play the ball - but a system to implement this action has to be worked on during training or we're going to lose goals playing like this.

Agree on both counts Steve especially the first & yes you did bring it up last season. No "variety" was seen yesterday at all from throw-ins or corner kicks.Even if an occasional long throw can be desptched "quicker" it might help but the players need to know when that's coming & be in position to receive that "quicker long throw".

The occasional short throw or corner also will have defences thinking twice rather than being prepared by knowing whats going to come, even before the match gets under way.

A little bit of work on the practise ground will improve matters & hopefully that will happen.

There needs to be more variety. At the moment opposing defenders know there is going to be a long throw, so they have time to get into position, have a quick breather and get ready. Putting in a few short throws would leave uncertainty in their minds and may result in some being dragged out of position.

At Horsham last season I think we took the only short corner of the whole season it went something like this.

Wilson played it short to Healy (who was about 5 yards away) who then played it back to Wilson who then fired in a rasping cross from a different angle for Clarke to head home.

Proves short corners do work.

Against Maidstone a couple of seasons ago at Sittingbourne, Lacey took a long throw on the right and instead of firing it into the box sent it cross field to Robinson who nearly scored (if he had been more alert he would have been).

Yet again proves it could work.

I'm more than happyy that we continue the trend of long throws and WW taking good corners.

I thought most of his deliveries from corners on monday were very good.

Laceys throws will work for us this season-we have only just acquired welford and he is settling in-at last we have a proper target man to capitalise on them-be patient.

I would agree that we are very static at corners-we run around a bit in circles-but we don't see players running in and really attacking the ball from the edge of the box-that needs some work on it.

I also question the necessity of Ball to go up for corners (especially when saunders is back ).Ball is ok in the air-but not brilliant-and i have not seen him win a ball at a corner/free kick-would he be better of staying in defence allowing marden/sherman to go up to the edge of the box for the loose ball as they both have good long distance shots on them it seems ?
