International players at margate

Jeff Trices history site tells me that when Ishmail makes his debut-he will be the twelth fulll international to play for margate.

Just out of interest I had a look around some of the pre war pictures on Jeff's site and there are at least three more international players lurking there.

The 1937/8 picture shows Bernard Joy who was the last amateur to play in a full England side, against Belgium in 1936 (info from Wikipedia). He was at Arsenal at the time and, although he appears in the 1937/8 picture for Margate, it seems that he took over from the legendary Herbie Roberts in October that season when Roberts broke a leg.

In the 1935/6(3) picture is Mal Griffiths who was awarded 11 caps by Wales. He also played in the 1949 Cup Final for Leicester City but up against Wolves with Billy Wright and Bert Williams they had no chance and lost 3-1.

In the same picture is Reg Lewis who played in an England - Scotland match especially arranged in 1946 in aid of the Bolton Disaster Fund (info from Wikipedia). Reg apparently replaced original choice Tommy Lawton for that game. He also later received an England B cap and scored Arsenal's two goals in the 1950 Cup Final win against Liverpool.

The connection with all three is obviously Arsenal.

Can't get in there to check right now but hopefully the internationals list on my site should say it's for post-war players. Almost certain that Bernard Joy never actually played for Margate's first team so if that's right I wouldn't include him on any future list of pre-war internationals. Same goes for the game Reg Lewis played in - don't think that would count as a full cap. Another international from the Arsenal era was Horace Cumner (Wales) and I think Albert 'Billy' Mays who holds Margate's all-time goals in a season record also played for Wales. Possibly late 20's keeper Gerrit (Gerry) Keizer (sometimes spelt Keyser) might have played for Holland but can't remember off the top of my head. Definitely an interesting character though - there's quite a bit of info about him on the web. One of the best stories on that post-war list of internationals is about Mike Renshaw - definitely as obscure as Margate players get (only 1 appearance) but his profile's worth a look for the details about his USA career. Bit of a Tony Cascarino situation.

Absolutely right Jeff, it does say post war but I was just looking pre war for novelty value. All of those that I've mentioned just appear in your team photos so I don't really know how many, if any, games they played. The Bernard Joy one was typical as he appeared in the Margate team photo after becoming a full international. Still Herbie Roberts broken leg sorted that out.

In all probability the England international that Reg Lewis played in wouldn't count as a full international, it doesn't appear in any other listings that I have, including Geoffrey Green's Soccer in the Fifties which goes back to season 1946/47.

Funny you should mention Horace Cumner - I kept looking at his name because I think his picture appears in some old football mags but never bothered to check him.
