Cheers seemgee. Always a difficult ground to pick-up points. Let's hope Steve and the lads can turn things around in the cup at the weekend.

What you lost 2-0? incredible i thought you had the league sewn up after beating the Abbey....surely there can't be any better teams than you!!

It's a shame you associate yourself and illiterate comments with that fine flag you have waving next to your name, a picture of fred flintstone or barney rubble would be more appropriate.

Any comments on how the match went. Sounds like a very tight game with the first goal being a massive goal, looks like we conceded the second very late on whilst chasing the equaliser, does that sound accurate?

So long as we troubled ETU and could've and should've scored then i'm sure it'll be put right next time round.

He could always just use his normal name which he would of done if last Saturdays result had been different.

Not the best of performances and I think the result was about right as 2nd goal was very late when we were pushing forward towards the end.

Enfield Town (0) 0

East Thurrock United (1) 2 Webb 30, Richmond 90

Attendance 167

A hugely competitive game of football saw not much between the two teams at half time. East Thurrock edged it with a goal from Jimmy Webb courtesy of the Town wall. However the home side went on to have the better of the second half, creating more chances but without getting any reward. A late rally from Enfield came with the introduction of Paul Campbell and Bryan Hammatt, but they were unable to find an equaliser. East Thurrock were creating the more dangerous opportunities but only managed to confirm the win with a late goal from Neil Richmond.

The game started well with both sides playing the ball around. Adam Wallace had a shot blocked and Michael Bardle did well to clear from Kris Newby. Bardle then did well to dispossess Richmond as he tried to control the ball for a shot. Craig McKay was on hand to rob Richmond when he appeared through. A tempting cross from Fabio Valenti was planted back in the danger area, but Joe Keith maintained his composure to clear. A great chance came for The Rocks when a long ball picked out Newby, but he glanced his header over. In a hectic period Liam Hope curled a shot just too high, while at the other end Jordan Lockie steered the ball behind for a corner. With the pace hotting up Wallace chased a ball colliding with Richard Wray who was out quickly to gather. The break through came when Jimmy Webb took a free kick from the edge of the box which seemed to take a deflection stranding Rob Blackburne in no mans land.

The second half saw East Thurrock up the pace. Lockie was lucky to see a clearance fall kindly for Blackburne after Kye Ruel had charged down a quick break then caught the Enfield defence out, allowing him to lob Blackburne who could only watch as the ball went past the post. Newby was able to block a sloppy clearance by Mark Kirby but again Blackburne was on hand. Wallace and Bardle combined well to win a corner but the kick saw the ball ricochet around the area, but it wouldn’t come down for a shot. The chance of the game came with Richmond picked out unmarked in front of goal, but he blazed over from close range. Enfield’s best chance for an equaliser then came when Morton cut the ball inside to Byfield who created space and put the ball clear of Wray only to see it go outside the post. Valenti had some luck on the right and Sammons was fortunate to see his clearance loop over his own keeper and fall just wide. Max Cornhill came close to a Thurrock second goal, his volley hitting the post. Bryan Hammatt livened things up for Town, cutting a shot to the back post but Wray managed to clear the follow up shot. Byfield picked up a booking for a late challenge on Sammons. Town kept looking for an equaliser, Hammatt firing over and a 40 yard belter from Protheroe testing Wray, but when Webb danced along the line he cut the ball past Blackburne giving Richmond the simplest of tap ins and this time he made no mistake. .

East Thurrock United: Richard Wray, Ryan Sammons, Joe Keith, Ben Wood, Steve Sheehan, Steve Harrison, Kris Newby, Max Cornhill, Neil Richmond, Kye Ruel, Jimmy Webb.

Subs Not Used: James Donovan, Lee Hodges, Martin Llewellyn, Connor Mead, Tom Dodkins.

Booked: Sheehan, Newby.

Enfield Town: Rob Blackburne, Jordan Lockie, Michael Bardle, Craig McKay, Mark Kirby, Lee Protheroe, Fabio Valenti (Paul Campbell 73), Richard Morton (Rudi Hall 82),Liam Hope (Bryan Hammatt 73), Adam Wallace, Sam Byfield.

Booked: Byfield.

As noted in other threads, I was really looking forward to this match, but.................

Hugely competitive in what way ?

Thurrock set out to win the game from the start and succeeded.

Town set out to hope for a draw with a 4 - 5 -1 formation with forward Hope playing in midfield.

At 0 - 1 after 30 mins there was absolutely no change in our shape or style of play.

Half time brought no change and with 19 mins to go, still 0 - 1 changes were made. All too little too late, in my opinion.

I hear from fellow supporters and read the programme notes that we have 28 - 30 players signed, but we persist with players out of position and others not even on the bench ! Where are they ?

The tactics of "lets set it up to get a point" failed misserably and in my opinion were poor tactics against a team that looked good going forward but were extremely edgy on the few occassions we actually attacked their back line in the second half.

I am sure othesr will have counter views on the tactics employed.

Not from me OT - I make you pretty much right.

If we must employ 5 in midfield (and I don't like the tactic), then why not use a real midfielder rather than an out of position Liam? With a Rudi or a Paul Marks in there, perhaps we might have won a bit more possession in midfield. And while we were losing the midfield battle to Max Cornhill and Kris Newby, who dominated as usual, our midfield 5 weren't able to get forward to give Adam Wallace the support he needed so desperately.

Unfortunately , Steve doesn't have Marksy available for selection due to non footballing reasons, plus with both Dan Forward and Jonesy also having been unable to be selected , options in the centre of the park have been limited. Injuries to Ben Hammond and now Deniz Mehmet , coupled with the injury to Phil have reduced player availability. Hopefully the situation will ease shortly and I know that this was one of the reasons that was foreseen especially the midfield issue that promted a use of 4,3,3 in the final few pre season games and the first two league matches. Everyone is entitled to their opinions that is what makes football the game we all love. Father Jack I know that Steve is concerned with getting support to Adam as well so I am sure this will be addressed.

The best thing is that it is early and can be sorted out, only 40 games to go!!!!

It is precisely because I admire Steve Newing and what he has done for the club that I feel comfortable in calling him when it doesn't go right. Okay, given what you've told me about player availability, may I suggest Daniel Jones in either the 7 or 9 shirt, and Rudi or Michael Bardle into midfield? Another temporary fix may be Kirbs in midfield, with any one of about 50 back up centre backs available. Thoughts?
