Hornchurch 0 Hayes 2

Well the expectation was high, and the conditions and pitch were perfect but this evening the performance from the team showed only flashes of inspiration.

Hayes showed how important it was to take your chances, scoring twice from their handful whilst for all of our possession we failed to penetrate their defence sufficiently to really test their keeper.

It started brightly enough though with a Steve West header being well saved in the 4th minute but after Hayes scored in the 12th minute through Peter Holsgrove we were subdued.

An interesting second tactical change from George Borg, replacing Adam Locke with Steve Jones and Steve West moving back into defence seemed to perk the side up in the opening minutes of the second half but the Hayes defence eventually learned to cope. As we tried to step up our performance towards the end more chances presented themselves with Steve West coming closest one minute into injury time with a header into the side-netting. Our probable fate was made certain in the 4th minute of injury time when substitute Shane Deyetrious made it 2-0 to the visitors from a break-away.

Line-up: Gay, Gooding, Rowland, Adedeji, Marsden, Locke (Jones 45), Keeling, Southon, West, Andrew Martin (Finlay 85), John Martin. Subs not used:- Moore, Cowley, Collier.

Just a few things...

1. Could their no. 16 actually play football or was he only able to hack down opposition players? How he stayed on the pitch I will never know.

2. I thought if a player continuously played for time they should be cautioned, or at least warned about his behaviour.

3. As much as I've tried to keep out of this I'm afraid I have to say something. Please can someone explain to Locke we play in red and white (at least at home). It would also be nice to see him battle for possession - other than a few touches (most of which he lost) I really don't remember seeing him on the pitch and he was right in the middle of it!

Bring on the Raging Ox (Cowley) I say. If anyone gives his all it's him.

Good reactive save from their 'keeper and another couple of fantastic saves from Danny Boy.

Totally agree about Locke, after the Millwall game where he played well i said to myself i will give the the first two matches before commenting again but he was appaling in the first half. The same old thing jogging around and lacklustre passing and tackling, it seems an insult that Barry and Danny arn't playing when he is. Look how we improved in the second half actually playing the ball and having a few efforts on goal, our seconed goal was unlucky caught on the break.

Last Chance Locke for me i'm afraid.

I thought, like the 1st goal, it was due to lack of concentration in defence. The guy crossing it in should have been stopped and the scorer was unmarked in front of an open goal! Though, granted it was on the break I still think we could have done better.

Agree with whoever said it though - Ollie was definitely MOTM. Wonderful battling display as well as showing us how much skill, strength and aggression he has.

Locke's performance last night was a continuation of how he played for much of last season! Having not been a regular visitor to this site over the past few non-footballing months, can someone possibly tell me what has happened to McGowan and Vinny? They still here?

On the bright side, we didn't play that badly last night, its certainly a big step up from the Div one North. I think we need a few games to find our feet in this division, then we'll be on our way. My only fear is that I don't think we will find our first points this coming Saturday against Kettering, but lets hope that we can!

Cheers guys, glad to hear they are both still with us! Thought we really missed Gav in midfield last night. I personally thought he's moving from right wing back into a more centre midfield position last season, was instrumental in our turn of form from late Feb onwards. Whilst we are on the subject, any other player departures from the club that I have missed? I know that Dimitri, Joppo and Stowe left, any others?

Well...I have already said my peice on other postings....we have got to battle for everyball and not to get caught flat footed otherwise we will be slaughtered by better teams....We have the talent and skills to play brilliant footie, let,s stop hoofing up the field most of the time!

Westie seems more solid and better at the back though, and Our strikers need to battle more with support from midfield otherwise we will lose every war!!!
