Enfield Town (0) 2 Byfield 54, Kirby 57

Waltham Abbey (1) 1 Keepance 3

Attendance 261

Despite going behind to an early goal, Town put Abbey under pressure for much of the game, eventually settling for a win courtesy of two second half goals in three minutes.

Waltham Abbey got the perfect start when Andy Keepance met a free kick unmarked, looping a header over the stranded Rob Blackburne after three minutes. Unfortunately Keepance day went downhill soon after when he went off injured. Enfield where shaken into action by the goal and Deniz Mehmet came close with a decent shot. Adam Wallace shrugged off a defender before firing home only for the goal to be ruled out. Abbey escaped a ball to the back post, then a shot from Lee Protheroe. Liam Hope had the best chance to open the scoring for Enfield, bringing down Sam Byfield’s centre but shot straight at Harry Ricketts. Jey Siva then picked out Richard Morton, who headed over. Amin Ibrahim had a chance from a poor clearance but hit his shot high. As Abbey were pinned back Adam Wallace found the side netting. A rare break out saw Marshall Smith fire wide but Enfield kept up the pressure to the break, Protheroe drawing a fine save from Abbey’s Harry Ricketts, and Richard Morton firing wide on the stroke of half time.

Abbey where kept on the back foot in the second half, escaping early on when Ricketts made a good save, then denied Mark Kirby from the corner, Richard Morton’s follow up cannoning off a defender onto the post. An Abbey break saw Smith through again, but Blackburne was out quickly to charge down his shot. Then Abbey were dealt a double blow. Enfield’s Adam Wallace fired low across the goal from the right and Sam Byfield slammed home from close range. Abbey tried to respond from a free kick, but Blackburne gathered well. Minutes later Mark Kirby put the home club ahead with a simple tap in from close range for what proved the winner. A low drive from Lockie and an overhead attempt by Byfield failed to find the mark. Blackburne got down bravely taking the ball off the feet of Joe Eubel as Abbey looked to get back into the game, but Enfield shut up shop. There were still chances though. Substitute Paul Campbell’s first touch played Wallace into the box but the ball stuck under his feet, and Rudi Hall was only denied by a class save from Ricketts. .

The 261 gate is on the healthy side too. bearing in mind Andy was in Edmonton, Gazza was absent and me and my usual little gang are away as well, not to mention others still on their summer hols. lets hope we keep the attendances above the 250 mark all season, the manager and players deserve good support just from the standards they have been setting from last season, pre season and now 3 from 3 points in the league.

well doen boys. how many wabbey players were in their team last season?

i am expectng cmmet from Wabbeyman and AbbeyNut as well. where is he?

One of those games that "could" have been 6 - 2. Ricketts made several good saves.

Town showed great patience and just kept working until a break thro' which is encouraging.

With the exception of the first 3 mins, I thought Lee Protheroe had a very good game in a central position.

Looking forward to Tuesday at Thurrock.:futbolbud2:

Only three remaining from last season? Some would say that it's a tad careless to lose so many players. Have you informed Missing Persons, and do you have anyone out there looking for them? waytogo.gif

Wabbey have never brought over more than about 10 supporters in any case, so the 261 crowd were all ours???
