A nation of leagues

By Kevin Mooney

Minor leagues have been a fixture of sports in America for decades. Sometimes the teams in these leagues are independent of any major league franchise, but normally they exist as a 'farm team' to their larger cousins. These teams, and the cities who host them, can only aspire to support the big-league franchises and to provide gateway for young athletes to move their way up to 'the show.'

Things work quite differently in European football, however.

England has seven main levels of football leagues ranging from the top-flight Premier League, all the way down to three parallel regional leagues, all of which are overseen by the Football Association, or FA. The teams in these leagues are all independently operated, and cannot share owners or official relationships.

Despite glaring differences in size and fan support between teams such as Arsenal and the Isthmian League's AFC Hornchurch, all of the teams in the hierarchy are linked by this structure.

To an outsider, the most fascinating aspect of this structure is the concept of relegation and promotion. It sees teams who perform poorly in the upper echelons of English football move down into the lower divisions, while the top finishers in the lower divisions move their way up the ladder.

The process works like this: At the end of each season, the bottom three teams in the standings are dropped, or relegated, from the Premier League to the second-level of English football, the Championship. Their places are taken by the top two finishers in the Championship and the winner of a playoff between the teams in the rest of the top six. This continues all the way down to the bottom tier of football, and each league ends up with several new teams each season.

The most recent Cinderella story in regards to promotion is current Premier League member Blackpool. As recently as 2001 Blackpool was toiling in the fourth level of England's football hierarchy, then known as Division Three. However, after a quick promotion to Division Two, they moved up to the Championship for the 2007/08 season. Last season, Blackpool fought their way into the Championship playoff, and secured their return to England's top flight

for the first time since 1971.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are currently two teams in League One – Charlton Athletic and Southampton – who were playing in the Premier League at the same time Blackpool was in the Football League's basement.

A look at stadium capacities in the Premier League and Championship also adds an interesting element to the hierarchy. As clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United pack their stadiums with 60,000 and 75,000 fans for every game, Blackpool's Bloomfield Road seats a mere 12,555. In the Championship, the 9,088 Scunthorpe United fans that fill Glanford Park would occupy just one corner of Leeds' nearly 40,000-seat Elland Road.
