Strengthen the defence

I think tonight showed where we need to bring players in. With Steve Daly out and Howard still injured we looked slow and vulnerable at the back. We've got ourselves a good keeper now, despite the penalty incident tonight, but need something better in front of him.

We might also think about another midfielder as the game changed when we lost Payne. Spencer and Hyatt were shocking tonight.

I thought Spencer had another shocker tonight. Of the 180 minutes (approx) we've played so far this season, he's been absent or poor for well over three quarters. But, in the second half, there was no option to replace him as such as I'm still not sure of Whatfords ability at this level.

It was a pretty discouraging performance after Saturday's match, and as has been said already, Spencer was poor. Freddie had a bit of a mare when he came on but improved a bit in the second half. At least he was looking to be involved and get stuck in. Chopper, Steer and Haddow again look like very good players, but the fact we lost our width so there was nobody to cross to the four stikers in the last few minutes was a little silly.

On the up side Adie Brown played really well. Lets hope Daly is playing on Saturday because we lacked discipline without him around, he marshalled the team superbly at Epsom.

I cannot believe all the critisism of Ryan Spencer. He is by far our best player and last night was all alone in midfield, he tried to do too much and cover too much ground this affected his performance. The new boys apart from Steer were all poor and I thought Adie Brown was dreadful on the right side of defence, he can only play in the centre. Marlow though not a good side were too strong and organised for us. It will take a few weeks and the addition of a few proven players before we see much improvement.

It's strange how poeple see things differently ! I though both Steer and Spencer were poor !! Besides his crap passing I thought Brown did play well and was it just me or did you think Bartley played very well ? But we can argue this all day who who well/badly coz at the end of it all , it was poor and we did miss Daly big time .

Adie Brown was our best player last night. As for Spencer being good, I'm afraid the poster is a bit of a by name by nature character if he honestly believes what he wrote.

And before the inevitable remark comes back, yes I am called BFR for a reason!

I came out of the match thinking 'how the hell did we just lose at home to Marlow?' but we're never going to win games playing like that. It's true that their winner was only via a penalty but we didn't create much ourselves. After Boot scored I was hoping it may lead on to more goals, but in fact the performance went downhill. My concern is, if Slough have aspirations of promotion, it's no good being 3 points off the top already. We need to be winning home games such as these (even if 'home' is Windsor) against weaker teams like Marlow.

We played well on Saturday because Spencer played well. Against Marlow it was a different story---I think its the midfield that needs strengthening to support Spencer.

We're a few players short, I'm sure Eddie and Gilksy know this. At the moment we're having to play people who aren't properly match fit (Hyatt), out of position (Browne), and we still have Andy Deaner!

Spencer IS quality, but he can't run the show on his own. Once Payne went off our midfield went missing. Hyatt and Spencer together doesn't seem to work

It's asking a lot with the summer of yet more uncertainty and a patchy pre-season and a virtually new team

Reality after Saturday I'm afraid.

Hopefully new signings will be made to strengthen things in all areas.

Agree that the midfield needs addressing too but my comments about the defence were based on the ratio of chances to goals. If you think how many chances we had last night to score one goal yet Marlow had a fraction of the opportunities and were allowed to score twice.

From last week's Observer:

Quote:
I believe how the Rebels do this season really depends on two players.

Ian Hodges needs to improve on last season where he only scored two-goals for the club. Hodges has the talent as he scored fifteen goals in the Conference only two-years ago, but the Rebels are yet to see the best of the former Hayes striker.

The other is Ryan Spencer. With no Veli Hakki, Byron Bubb or Michael Gilkes, Spencer is the only real Slough player in midfield able to create something out of nothing.

Bright lad whoever wrote that :-)

I've decided that the Canvey games going to take place at that time every year in a friendly.

Like the way you have changed your picture - something to do with a meeting on Saturday :-)

Staines were not too good. Paul Ellis (remember him) was their playmaker and Maskell and Ibe up front were fairly anonymous. Staines also look a little lacking pace at the back. Windsor were probably the opposite. Cousins, Tilbury and Townley looked very good at the back. In fact Leon looks back to his best, much as he was when he first joined us. Great stand though - it's like the one at Dorchester, but slightly smaller. Staines can probably play a lot better though as their pre-season results suggested.

Could be difficult, as the next time 2nd August falls on a Saturday is 2008 <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
