GT WAKERING 1 HORNCHURCH 1

Hornchurch made their customary pre-season visit to Great Wakering, but this time it was different, as there was no Nobby Johnson to greet them. Nobby had only one club – Great Wakering – and during the time he was there he filled virtually every position and job that the club had. Aged 65 Nobby passed away at home on Tuesday 27th July.Nobby was caretaker at a local school until he was forced to retire after being seriously injured during a robby at the football clubhouse in 2002. He was involved with Great Wakering for over forty years, and was well known in the Southend area. He leaves behind a son, a daughter and two grandchildren. As a mark of respect both team wore black armbands today.

On ahot and sunny day, and on an excellent playing surface, Hornchurch looked confident as they dominated the first half. Greg Enstone forced the first of many fine saves from home keeper Lewis Green, and Leon Hunter weaved a way through and hit his shot inches wide of the post. Jamie Richards combined well with Michael Spencer to set Hunter up, and Green made another good save to keep the ball out.

Hornchurch took the lead when LEON HUNTER hit in a first time shot that screamed into the net from 30 yards out. A free kick from Jamie Dormer found Spencer who was denied by Green, whilst a Jamie Richards free kick rebounded off the crossbar. Hunter nearly made it two shortly before half time when he ran through the middle, but his goal bound shot was blocked by a defender.

Predictably both sides made changes during the second half. Hornchurch continued to press forward and Jo Flack made a good run, which ended with a cross into the goalmouth where Martin Tuohy forced another good save from keeper Green, who touched the ball onto the crossbar and to safety. The home side came back with a good move which enabled their substitute to find a gap in the defence, only for Darren Behcet to make an excellent save. Behcet then turned a shot around the post, before Jonathan Hunt, now returning to full fitness after his long lay off through injury, sent over a perfect centre which Paul Shave headed narrowly wide of the far post.

Great Wakering levelled the score when they were awarded a free kick about thirty yards out, and DAN TRENKEL hammered home an unstoppable shot. Hornchurch nearly regained the lead when a shot from Jamie Dormer was blocked by a defender. The ball ran out to Martin Tuohy whose shot on the turn was saved in fine style by Lewis Green A Richards corner found Elliot Styles whose header skimmed the bar, and a through pass from Jonathan Hunt sent Tuohy racing away, only for Green to race out to save at his feet.

Tommy Black came on, and set up Hunt whose shot was inches wide of the post, and the real drama came in the second minute of stoppage time. Hornchurch were awarded a free kick just outside the area. Jonathan Hunt stepped up to hammer the ball past the wall, and keeper Green dived on the ball right on the line, just as the final whistle went.
