Referees? Listen to players? What's the point?

Very good Mew.

I'm still in favour of referees dealing with the team skippers alone, rather than all and sundry.

Things can out of hand far too quickly when everyone joins in the 'chat'

Very utopian. Meanwhile back on planet Earth... Those of us who have been playing and/or watching footy for a while at any level can think of instances when the referee thinks (or appears to think) he is the reason people have paid good money to come into the ground. Our ref today was not one of those, thankfully; there was only one booking that I can recall and it seemed pretty reasonable (even if it was against an Egham man). However, the ability of the assistant referees can make or break a game as well, and there were at least two occasions today against Mole Valley when forwards running from an onside position onto through balls were incorrectly ruled offside. That builds up frustration, and may eventually contribute to yellow cards being awarded; I wonder if there are any statistics on how many cards are shown for "lip" as opposed to fouls?
