Substitute Keeper

I haven't managed to get time off to see a PSF so far, however I've noticed we have used or named a second 'keeper yet. It is quite possible that we won't need to play a second keeper all season, but isn't squad selection a 'belt and braces' job?

It's been said on another post that we can always use Aleks Krunic, if that is the case surely playing him for half a PSF would give IOC the chance to evaluate him under 'match conditions'.

The contrast between last seasons PSF's (where we played over half a dozen keepers ... Terry & Nev not making up their minds) and this seasons PSF's with just JT between the sticks is quite stark.

I'm sure if JT gets injured we can get someone in on loan. Clubs at this level usually stick a young keeper on the bench. Not many mature keepers are prepared to spend all season on the bench. Plus it's not a very good way of using the wage budget.

Tend to agree with CE.

Loan keepers normally available.

Only problem is if JT gets injured on say bank holiday saturday-with another game on monday-that would make it a bit interesting !!

Maybe in his next interview with IOC-wellsie could ask the specific questiuon as to what the sub goalkeeper situation is-and if we do not have a sub keeper-which of the outfield players would then put on the gloves ?

Am I being paranoid - but is a keeper on the bench a luxury ? It's a specialist position, and if a keeper gets injured in the first half of a game (happened with loan keeper Billy McMahon his debut towards the end of the Kinnear era) that could jeopardise the result if an outfield player is forced to put on the gloves.

Whats the bigger risk and worst that can happen.

Keeper gets injured-and as a result-we lose the one game (and thus 3 points )We may have lost/drawn the same game anyway.

On other hand-the playing budget enables IOC to sign an 'extra', outfield player for the season,by sacrificing a keeper -and thus you have that player available for 42 games, and that one player may help towards perhaps 2 /3 additional wins-so the benefit to me outweighs the risk.

The other thing that of course can happen is a player 'misses the bus' /gets injured in warm up/ goes ill on the morning. However, the risk is still a maximum of 3 points lost -so probably worth the risk as above.(in such circumstances-i wonder which outfield player would go in goal.

That all given- i change my position when it is an FA trophy or FA Cup game-you only get one chance there-not 42 -and so for me-in a CUP game-you have to have a sub keeper

How often is our keeper substituted during a game? It happens on average less than once a season, I reckon. And outfield players usually do well when they go in goal! That said, teams are allowed a ridiculous number on the bench these days (how did we cope in the old days of one or no subs!) so you might as well have a keeper, I s'pose.

I would just like to add that it would be fantastic if we could get Paul Egan (HAIRBEAR) back as No 2 Goalie. Apparently he has regained his playing career albeit in sunday league games, however he was blue thru and thru and always gave 100% for the team. Only stumbling block I could see would be encouraging his father to agree to him playing again because of his past injuries.... what do you reckon Cliff?????? :)
