HORNCHURCH 1 COLCHESTER 2

Colchester brought only a handful of supporters for the Essex Senior Cup Final, which meant that the crowd was lower than anticipated. Colchester looked a well drilled team when he came forward and went close when Michael Rafter fired wide after the home defence was opened up on the right. Simon Hackney made ground on the left and was well tackled by Ronnie Fletcher, and then Hackney put in a powerful header that was well saved by Darren Behcet who turned the ball around for a corner.

Hornchurch replied when Behcet punted a long ball down field and Jo Flack was pulled down as he went through the middle. Tommy Black took the free kick and Ben Williams made a very good save to keep the ball out. Fletcher headed away from Medi Elito and Fletcher again tackled to stop Rafter as he moved in.

Michael Spencer frequently caused problems on the left, and he won a free kick when he was brought down as he cut inside of the defender. Tommy Black took the kick and Williams saved well. A Billy Coyne cross was headed goalwards by Paul Shave who appeared to be pushed over, though no action was taken by the referee. A good move that started when Shave headed on to Jamie Richards was continued when Jamie touched the ball on to Black, whose excellent cross field pass found Jo Flack, but his run to goal was stopped by an offside flag.

Simon Hackney made a rapid burst down the wing and his cross found Rafter whose header was well saved by Behcet, whilst Sam Corcoran went close, but was stopped by a good tackle from Ronnie Fletcher. A free kick was awarded and from this Craig Arnott hit his shot over the bar. Michael Spencer hurled a long throw into a packed goalmouth where Paul Shave rose well but his header was just over the bar, and close to half time Jo Flack sent Tommy Black away, and his shot was touched around the post for a corner. Jamie Dormer took the kick and the ball went out for another corner. Dormer again floated the ball over and keeper Williams punched clear as the half time whistle went.

Hornchurch came out strongly in the second half, and opened up the Colchester defence, and took the lead when TOMMY BLACK converted a low cross from the left following good work by Jamie Richards. Spencer went close with a first time shot which Williams did well to hold, and Elliot Styles headed away when Colchester centred from the left. A Tommy Black free kick was well held by Williams right under the bar and a long clearance from Styles reached Richards, who was thwarted by keeper Williams who reacted quickly to rush out to clear.

The pattern of play changed almost immediately when FREDDIE LAPADO came on as substitute, and within a minute of coming on, he found himself unmarked to slot the ball home from the edge of the area, with the home defence caught too square. Colchester stepped up the pace and a long range shot clipped the bar, whilst at the other end Tommy Black’s corner was caught by Williams as it curved goalwards. Darren Behcet made a similar save at the other end, and his long clearance was played on by Dormer to Jo Flack, who was clear but he was once again pulled up for offside.

FREDDIE LAPADO gave Colchester the lead with an excellent shot after the home defence was opened up from the left side, and Hornchurch brought on Dave McSweeney, Rikki Burbridge and Tambeson Eyong and began to force their way forward. Spencer made a penetrating run on the left and played the ball through to McSweeney who was promptly brought down. Jamie Richards took a quick free kick but the move was concluded by another offside flag.

Tambeson Eyong raced through from the right, leaving defenders in his wake, but his shot was over the bar. Tambeson then made another run from the right and this time his goal bound shot was turned around the post by the diving Williams. Hornchurch continued to pile forward and in the last minute a long throw from Rickie Hayles was scrambled to safety as the Football League side held out desperately.

Ian - do you know what the official attendance was?

I did ask the Essex FA, as it was their match and not ours - but they did not know.

Could not find Minty after the game either.

Sorry.
