Are Refs?

My personal view is that there is no need to raise the fees. I would suggest some would argue that the cost of travelling has risen shaply in the last year so that needs to be reflected.

Kroons and me have discussed this issue a few times - we have different opinions regarding at what level players should be paying to play but, regardless of that, the amount they have to pay must be going up year on year.

We all know about clubs higher up the ladder that are going bust, mainly due to not paying their taxes although they still manage to pay players but what's not often mentioned are the teams lower down the pyramid at step 6 and below who are folding. In some cases whole leagues are folding due to lack of numbers. The Crawley & District League has disappeared this season and it's not the only one. A lot of the clubs say the reason is it's just too expensive to run a football team. Official's fees, whilst not the only cause, are mentioned all the time alongside gas / electricty / petrol prices etc.

The Surrey Elite league only has one official per game I think, so it's not too bad, but some leagues at step 7 have three officials and it's ruining them. There's even one league where the home club has to pay the assessor £18 if one's present so that's four lots of fees they have to come up with. And people moan if these clubs try to charge £3 or £4 to get in.

Increase in Petrol Prices is a smoke screen.Surely the Referee's Secretary knows where every Official lives, and could allocate accordingly,so that a maximum distance is travelled to any game.Does anyone know the new rates to be paid.

CCL 1 has still got teams in the league without lights. Instead of focusing on the officials fees, why do you all not petition the league for consistency. Teams without lights do not have any home midweek games and also have earlier kick offs during the winter months. This is a drastic savings throughout the year on electricity costs. So teams who are up to standard in CCL 1 are basically being punished financially for having better grounds. Surely the league needs to come up with, no team plays midweek and all kick offs are moved to 2:00 in the winter months.

It's the massive increase in the cost of burgers that most Refs should really worry about !

So how much are the fees for the new season?

Dare I mention this to my other half??? She may start househunting when she finds out.

Shall be at the meeting tomorrow night to pick up my handbook so guess I will find out all I need to know then.

Incidentally, this is a meeting where we are 'encouraged' to attend and we get no petrol money at all!! Disgraceful

On the other hand there is grub afterwards so I presume Krooner will be there

I am there mate but only to hear instructions given out to officials that they never bother to tell the clubs and then we get it in the neck when we carry them out :)

See you there Footy Mad :)
