ESL Stansted won the FA Vase in 1984 beating United Counties Stamford 3-2 with goals from Holt,Gillard and Reading. In the seventies Billericay Town made the treble(1976-77-79) but since then only Canvey Island(1992-93) and Concord (2007-08)reached the semis and Basildon Utd the quarter-finals in 1994-95.A mere result for a League that have seen many of their clubs moving up the echelons of Non League Football and doing well. It's time the ESL does itself justice and by the sounds coming from pre-season results I believe one of our sides this year can go all the way.I believe it would help if when we have got an FA Vase tie we shouldn't have any mid-week matches so the clubs can prepare themselves properly and give their best shots. What you reckon?futbolbud2.gif

Would very much like a run in the FA Vase.

For a small club like Witham, low crowds for a town it's size, I reckon the only way we will attract extra support is a cup run of some sort.

At Step 5 the FA Vase is a more realistic bet but also a run in the FA Cup may do it too.

Someone other than Whitley Bay to win please, and certainly a team from Essex / the ESL would be good.

I'm sorry but the ESL just isn't up to standard of the Ridgeons, the North West Counties, the Western League or the Northern League, and that is why those divisions have dominated the FA Vase in the past decade. They have more money and crucially they play in larger geographical regions, which means that there isn't the same competition for players as there is between ESL clubs. Whitley Bay for example, and I've seen them a few times in the last 3 or 4 years, have had pretty much the same team for 4 seasons. That happens much more where the "density" of clubs isn't as great.

My view is that Witham have the best chance of an ESL run this season, but I'd be surprised to see even them past the last 16. However, I think an ESL Select XI would have a great shot of winning it. It's just that the top players in our league at the moment are spread too thinly between the clubs, which is good in terms of making a tight competitive league, but not in terms of delivering an ESL Vase Winner.

To Barking Mad: I don't know, you can't ask me that when the season hasn't even started. Last season I think I saw everyone in the league at least 3 times, some more than others, but most sides had at least 2 or 3 players that consistently caught the eye. I'm not sure whether I'll get to as many ESL games this season though. Now Waltham Forest have moved back into Wadham Lodge the temptation to just nip down the road and watch them will probably win out, especially if I end up working Saturday mornings again.

Billericay had left the ESL when they won the Vase in 78-9 and Concord lost at home to Lowestoft at the quarter-final stage.

East Ham reached the quarter-final stage in 76-7, but had not joined the ESL at that time,

Oh do keep up Coachie.. dance%20%282%29.gif
