Ian Tomlinson

Recommended Posts

For those of you scratching your heads in a Stan Laurel fashion, Ian Tomlinson was the unfortunate individual supposedly in the wrong place at the wrong time and got caught up in the G20 demonstrations on 1 April last year whilst supposedly walking home from work minding his own business. Mr Tomlinson was alegedly struck with a baton from behind by a member of the Police's Territorial Support Group and pushed to the ground during clashes between protesters and the Police, he appeared perfectly fine afterwards and was helped up before nonchalantly walking away, however he was found dead some ten minutes later in nearby Cornhill. Pathologist Dr Patel's post mortem concluded that Mr Tomlinson had died of 'coronary artery disease' consistent with a heart attack and natural causes so I am at a loss as to why the Police are now being accused of a 'cover up' following a hearing at the Crown Prosecution Service last Thursday.

As someone who has suffered from coronary heart disease and indeed had a triple bypass in 2007, I can tell you that if I'd been pushed to the ground while at my worst, in that manner, I might well have died too! If the unfortunate Mr Tomlinson was in the state that I was, then a sudden assault like that would very likely have brought on a fatal heart attack. I realise that you are just stirring it as usual, but Mr Tomlinson's family have my deepest sympathy. As for the policeman - I wouldn't like to have his job to do, and I expect he had been enduring a deal of provocation from others prior to him pushing Mr Tomlinson over. However, from the video evidence, Mr Tomlinson didn't appear to be involved in the demonstration. Did he perhaps say something to enrage the policeman?

If it was a 'verbal', then. the officer concerned should issue three warnings, unless the verbal was racist or likely to incite, and after that he should have arrested on a public order offence, which now normally carries a fixed penalty fine..

I don't think wacking the back of his legs with a baton counts as a warning.

Big J R - Don't you think it was strange that Tomlinson knew full well the intense and violent G20 demonstrations were taking place yet he chose to walk home right through the middle of them rather than taking a detour, afterall he knew the area like the back of his hand being an Evening Standard vendor for many years.

Yellow Bungle - Ian Tomlinson paid his money and took his choice on 1 April last year, like I said he didn't need to walk home slap bang through the middle of the G20 demonstration and could have quite easily taken a detour, why should the Police have to carry the can for that.

He, like thousands of oters worked in the City. How would you feel if it were a member of your family?

On another point, if the Met can spare so many officers to trapse up North to track down one person, perhaps they are overstaffed.

Can't agree, Rhodesey, and I speak as an ex.

The police have a duty to protect the innocent to go about their lawful business. Going home from work is a lawful business whichever route you chose to take.

I'm not going to go into the (alleged) semantics of the officer concerned other than to say he'd been disciplined on earlier occasions for (alleged) excessive force.

I think he'll lose his job, and I have no problem with that.

The British judicial system is administered by the rich, to favour the rich and privileged of this great country of ours. Do you really believe that had Ian Tomlinson been one of those select band of parasites the police would have escaped justice.I think not.

Justice comes at a price that many working class people can ill afford.

Big JR - I couldn't agree more however Tomlinson paid with his life for foolishly not taking a detour on 1 April last year and I can't say that I am very sympathetic

  • 9 months later...

Are Ian Tomlinson's disfunctional family ever going to let him rest in peace and stop looking for compensation from the Police in order to feather their own nests. Tomlinson was a homeless alcoholic who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time during the G20 protest two years ago and the Police were in no way to blame for his death.

That's bollox Rhodesy, the police were kettleing people in and anyone who happened to be in the City at that time were stuck. All he wanted to do was go home. In his inebriated state he was hardly a threat was he?

Yes he was in the wrong place at the wrong time but does that mean he deserved to die because of a single scumbag copper?

Er hello, big protest in London = people smashing up things.

Don't go near the city if you don't have to and don't try to tell me that he was just walking through the area, you don't get set on by the police for absolute no reason. The police have a hard enough job to do on a normal day with the scum that run around on our streets, let alone when there are hundreds if not thousands of people he'll bent on smashing everything in sight including the coppers, why should they have to put up with that just for a days work

He was working in the Square Mile, then went for a drink in the Square Mile and would not necessarily have been aware of what was about to happen. I was in the City that day and went home at lunchtime because I WAS aware. That still doesn't make him a troublemaker.

And yes, the police are capable of setting about people for no reason at all. BTW that's why I underlined single copper. I'm not tarring them all with the same brush.

Also, TV clearly shows him walking away with his hands in his pockets, there was absolutely no reason to slam him in the back. Whatever happen to a simple "Move along sir", this wasn't the f**king front line in Helmand Province!

In a democracy everyone has the right to peacefully protest against injustices, through demonstrations, strike action, or even writing to their local newspaper, and all to often the people that vandalise property have nothing whatsoever to do with the legal protesters.

The police are paid with taxpayers money to protect innocent people, and property, and it is certainly not in their job description to act like mindless thugs and attack innocent people like Mr Tomlinson.
