Arlesey Town

Looks like they will be up there next season by the looks of the players they are bringing in after last season. From their website:

To strengthen the squad even further we have also signed James Gray from Wealdstone, Alex O'Brien from Barton Rovers,Harry Hunt from Hitchin, Luke Knight from St Neots, Chris Waters from Boreham Wood, and Richard Hayward and Nick Leach from Chesham.

Waters will be a very good player at this level, Hunt played up front alongside Jamie Arlick last season for Hitchin and Leach joins his brother former Rebel Marc Leach there. Suprising signing is Richard Hayward who we all saw what a good keeper he was in the play-off final last season. Will offer a much tougher challenge this season it seems.

Must admit, when I saw these players had left there clubs, I was hoping we might of signed a few of them especially with Steve Batemans connections with Chesham. Richard Hayward and Nick Leach would have been two excellent signings.

All I can say is Arlesey must be splashing the money around big-time. Even Hitchin couldn't compete when Arlesey made the approach for Harry Hunt.

So how many leauge or cup games did either Ian Brown or Phil Turner play last year?

They both "signed" last summer and that is a club news "signing" not a local rag "signing".

Phil Turner did play in the friendlies. I don't know why you persist,Staines Rebel, with this futile signings thing.

I for one, like to surmise/research who's joining non-league teams, regardless of the one or two deals that fall through. Most of them do happen and it makes the build-up to the new season more exciting.

I think Steve Bateman is good at letting us supporters have the odd snippet of what's going on at the club.Too often in the past,we never got anything much in the way of news especially in the Martyn Deaner era.

Mind you,we never always got pre-season friendlies either !!! lol!

The local rags haven't always been great at presenting the facts but it must be better to have some news/publicity rather than none. There was nothing about Slough Town fc in this week's Observer or Express, which was a disappointment because that is the main reason I buy them.

O.K. sometimes they don't get the facts right. The Sun and The Daily Mail has been doing that for years and they still have the lion's share of readers,so ...so what !

To confirm (although i'm not quite sure what this has to do with Arlesey Town!) Ian Brown signed for us, but got a closer offer to his home from St Neots Town and he's quite in his right to change his mind if he wishes to if that's better for him and his family.

Phil Turner also signed for us and was with us until around October (when Chesham put in a 7-day approach for him) and signed for Chesham following that approach. Bates just never either put him on the bench or starting eleven as he had other players that he obviously thought were better. He was around and at many games watching.

Spot on 3spirit.

Most supporters up and down the country look forward to hearing what signings their club has made in the run up to the new season.

It's also a fact that most clubs will announce it as soon as the player has signed the registration form and I can't see any reason why they shouldn't.

As you say, most of the signings will come off but you will always get the odd few players that will change their mind it's just part and parcel of football.

But they did sign. So the club was right to say they signed. They couldn't play for anyone as they had signed for us. Why is this hard to understand. Just because someone signs doesn't mean they have to play.

Bateman signed players at the end of the season as back up but they didn't play so clearly didn't sign.

If they do not go on the pitch then they cannot contribute to the score, as was seen from the world cup where England took players who did not play - if they had played then the results may have been different.

Therefore it does not matter how many players we sign, it is the players who play who decide the results.

So how many games did they play in the leauge or a cup game - even as a sub? - none.

Staines,

Are you saying that it's a waste of time announcing players have signed in the run-up to the season in-case they change their mind?

As you know, players can and do, for various reasons, change their minds whether it is pre/beginning/mid/end of season.

Clubs and supporters are not that stupid to think that every player who signs will start the season at the club that they have signed for.

I'm sure that the vast majority of supporters would rather hear about signings (whether new or old) than not.

As 3spirit says, for most of us (if the news is good) it all adds to the anticipation/excitement in the weeks leading up to the start of the season.

It will be interesting to see what Staines has to say about the signing of Craig O'Connor. He has definitely signed, but will he play or in fact stay for longer than a month or so??? However, at this moment in time he IS a Slough Town Player, albiet a regular, squad, or bit part!!!

We will have to wait and see - patience is a virtue.

I beleive he will be suspended for a few games at the begining of the season anyhow...

nothing unusual there then chris, if the first few games are at home can we use him to collect the wayward balls behind the far end goal, as it would be a multifold help in keeping up his fitness, help him get used to finding the ball and understand what it looks like, and hopefully concentrate his mind on what a pain in the backside it is to find the ball when he clears it out of the ground when he shoots at goal. of course this could be applied to all other suspended players of course, maybe temper them a bit.
