Margate boss to give King another chance

Tuesday 22nd June 2010

MARGATE boss Iain O’Connell will give Samson King another chance to shine after the forward was recommended by player-coach John Keister.

King, who featured briefly for the Blues last season, has been invited to pre-season training by O’Connell.

Under Mark Butler’s management, King made just two substitute appearances, scoring once, but he clearly caught Keister’s eye before moving on.

O’Connell tells Your Thanet: “There will be a few more new faces in pre-season including Samson King who was here last season. Mark [butler] didn’t really like him, but I’m going to give him a chance because John Keister tells me he’s a very good player.

“He’s only young, he’s a big lad and he’s got pace, which is something we lack.”

Also in O’Connell’s plans are defender Dean Grant and striker Sam Cliff. Both finished the last campaign at Hartsdown Park and they become the latest to commit to the club for what O’Connell hopes will be a promotion push next season.

Grant joined Margate after being released by Dover Athletic in February and he provides O’Connell with cover at full-back.

Cliff, meanwhile, was part of the Kent side which won the FA County Youth Cup last season, although his first-team opportunities at Hartsdown were limited.

“Sammy Cliff’s agreed to stay and Dean Grant’s another young lad who’s going to sign,” O’Connell said. “[Dean] had an offer to go and play in Iceland but he’s decided to stay and fight for his place at Margate.

“Sammy’s got to mature and calm down a little bit when he’s playing. However, when he’s with the first-team lads he’ll gain from that and he will grow up.

“I’ve got a good feeling about Sammy, he’s got spirit although he’s got a bit of learning to do. I’m glad he’s going to stay – he had offers from other local clubs but he knows what a good club this is.”

Great that Sammy wants to stay with us - feel he could really start to fulfil his potential this season. Not sure about King - only saw him briefly at Hastings game and didn't seem to offer much then but it was only last 20 mins or so. Grant again looked lively and skilful and will provide good cover and could be a useful utility player.

Young-probably.

Big -if big = wide and unfit and can't jump - correct.

Pace- so have i -very slow.

Plenty of room for improvement then, but wish him well 'and maybe just maybe '-second time around he can show us something.

Lets be honest-his 'wonder goal' at wealdstone was a freak and his other shot finished behind him.

I really do hope it comes good for him second time around, but i'm a bit doubtful at the moment.

Does anyone know if he played anywhere between leaving us and the close season.

On a seperate matter-can someone remind me what position Josh Wincombe plays- i believe it is central defence-is that correct-know very little about him

Thanks.

So i guess we now have cover/competition for robinson at left back in the shape of winchcombe and later on probably stubbs.

I forget if Grant is right or left based-but if he is right based, i guess he gives cover for lacy at right back-although i also seem to remeber a few seasons back that Mr versatile in Jay Saunders also filled in more than adequately in a couple of games at right back.

Cover wil definately be needed here with lacy and robinsons predilictions for acquiring yellow and red cards.

I must admit i was hoping that dovers dean hill would be signing, but never mind
