Dick Marshall

Recommended Posts

Very sad news. I spent many hours over the past few years talking to Dick on the phone and at games and he was always happy to spend time chatting and exchanging news. He was a true gent and we will never see the likes of him again. Local football will be all the poorer without him, and I for one will miss him.

R.I.P. Dick.

He was the butt of some jokes over Canvey (which he took in good humour - such was the man) but he went with where the news was...and no matter how much you dislike it, Canvey were sucessful in obtaining Conference level football. He did the same during the '70's when we were sucessful but to his credit, he never forgot to give some space to other clubs and smaller clubs. He always supported the local non league football community with a passion. He was knowledgable, friendly and like a good tune (many a time I caught him tapping his feet and humming along to a song which I was playing when he was on the balcony at New Lodge).

I doubt we will see the like of someone like him again.

The Echo have some big, big shoes to fill. He will be sorely missed by so many people.

RIP Dick.

Like Gazza, I too got to know Dick well in my time "on the balcony" and it was hard to forget sometimes that he was officially there as a neutral observer for the press, such was his enthusiasm and feeling for our club. Always had time for a chat, even in recent times when I have had no official role in the club, and like everyone else I am shocked and saddened by his sudden passing. RIP Dick.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of another New Lodge Legend Dick Marshall, in my many happy years speant at New Lodge I have fond memories of a perfect gentleman who was so knowledgable of the local non-league, and respected by all who met him, he will be missed, we can all only live with our memories and feel for his family at times like this, RIP Dick...Brian Cornes
