Witham will 'fight to the bitter end'

Recommended Posts

WITHAM Town chairman Tony Last is vowing the club will “fight to the bitter end” to overturn the Football Association’s decision not to promote them into the Ryman League.“We are absolutely gutted, but we are fighting this all the way to the end and strongly believe the FA are wrong – they haven’t even followed their own rules,” Last told This Is Total Essex.

Town were runners-up in the Essex Senior League behind champions Stansted who were unable to be promoted to the Ryman League Division One North because their ground doesn’t come up to the standard needed, whereas Town’s id fully compliant.

“We even haven’t been officially informed we’ve been denied our right to promotion back to the Ryman League,” Last continued. “So we formally lodged our appeal last Friday with a letter sent by recorded delivery to the FA and we now await to hear a date for our appeal.”

The FA say that after all the champion clubs at Town’s level had been allocated leagues it left two vacancies for the second placed teams where the champions didn’t go up.

But Witham don’t qualify for promotion because of a points per game average.

'Bitter' does increasingly appear to be the operative word, especially in view of the half baked truths and erroneous opinions spouted as fact in last week's Non League Paper.

In truth, nobody particularly cares that much, if at all, outside those at the club, and at the moment nobody bears the Witham Town any ill will. I do hope that doesn't change, too, but further dummy spitting won't do them any good at all. Just win the title on the pitch next season and end all argument.

don't get me wrong i do think the method used by the fa for promotions is out dated but at the end of the day we all know that is the method used so moaning about the decision is really just gonna piss people off and make people hate the club!!!

I think witham have a point though

why do the FA continue to "reprieve" clubs who have failed, and not reward clubs who have succeeded.

by finishing bottom of a league a club deserve to be relegated irrespective of the regional machinations of reorganisation etc.....

clubs who finish second deserve to go up if the top club cannot.

habitually granting reprieves sends out a stark message that failure can be rewarded, whilst a club trying to build and move forward is stopped in its tracks due to the overcomplicated and over bureaucratiuc method of attaining promotion and relegation.

Good luck witham - i hope it works out (although i fear nothing will happen).

I do hope sooner rather than later the FA puts an end to this "north Essex telenovela".We are rather fed up with all of this and frankly couldn't give a monkey about it.The bottom line is:Witham finished second and their record as 2nd best placed team was worse than the others. That's it,end of.Move on and try to win it next year so nobody will argue about it.At the end of the day we all remember the winners and forget the runners-up.smile.gif

Do they have to cast aspersions on every other club in Essex just because they feel they have been badly mistreated. It's not anybody else's fault we are all treated the same by the F.A. If you have a gripe with the F.A. last! Have it with them don't slander and bad mouth the rest of us. We have nothing to with your petty puerile claims to promotion.

1. I have no connection with witham.

2. be careful what you say - " quote" "If you have a gripe with the F.A. last! Have it with them don't slander and bad mouth the rest of us. We have nothing to with your petty puerile claims to promotion"

This is slander - read the legal definition. - "Slander and libel are false or malicious claims that may harm someone's reputation"

I await you apology

I think you've misinterpreted Lightweight's post, it wasn't aimed at you. He was referring to Tony LAST, Witham Town's Chairman!!!!

As a lawyer of some 25 years standing...... I can tell you that Lightweight's post certainly doesn't amount to slander. Firstly, because the fact that it is written would make it libel anyway and not slander, and secondly because there is nothing libelous contained therewithin.

I hope this doesn't sound to pompous but Romford probably has the most illustrious past of any club that has ever played in the ESL, In spite of that history no-one at the club thought we had a god given right to play at a higher level and everyone connected to the club accepted that the only way to get promoted was to win the league.

This was achieved last year with a certain style and panache, and we are now proud members of the Rymans League because we earned our right to do so.

I would think that Mr Lasts behavior has made promotion even harder as Mighty Witham will now be the scalp that all other clubs will be after.

Flipping heck all the guy wants is he's team to get promoted which is pretty fair considering they finished 2nd and there is no real reason for Harlows reprieve

In previous seasons clubs like Hornchurch,Brentwood and Concord won the ESL and had the biggest budgets compared to any other team in the League. This year the club with the biggest budget finished only second therefore how can we reward failure? With the money they had they should have won it by a canter. To me finishing 2nd with that budget it's a failure so roll up your sleeves , open the cheque book again Witham and win it!It's as simple as thatfutbolbud2.gif

It is Anton you're right, but some of the things he's been saying about Romford and about the FA are entirely unture. I have sympathy with Witham that the system is wrong, but they should be doing this quietly not jumping up and down and giving inaccurate comments to the press every few days.

Fact - The FA system of promotion and relegation needs to be looked at because it is a shambles.

But the way Witham are carrying on is getting a bit boring and tedious, even though I see their point.

FCFan glad you said that because I was going to say the same thing. Lightweight said nothing that could be considered Libel, so SirGarfirldSobers I think you need to apologise.

Finally if people are going to throw about threats of Libel/Slander please get the definition right!

Garf mate I was not referring to you in anyway. That I used your post was neither here nor there it was used as a reference point to put my point across. The for or against witham going up do not concern me, It's the lies that were used against my team that has angered me. Also the flippant way he has treated the ESL and it's member club has also given me the @rse ache! As I have said before It's not an easy league to win and he should treat it with some respect.

Oh and garf I can't see how I could of slandered / libeled you unless you are in fact the real Sir Garfield Sobers. Failing that you are using a pseudonym as am I.
