The answer is that it was the only double-landlocked country in the world. ie being bordered only by countries which were themselves landlocked, Swizerland and Austria. Following the anschluss of 1938, Austria was unified with Germany, providing Leichtenstein a coastal neighbour, until 1945. Since the break up of the Soviet Union, Ukraine has also been a double-landlocked nation.
