Only AFF has come anywhere near the correct answer. I set the question a week ago, and I'm quite happy to wait for it. However, it's not much fun for anyone having to wait to get this thread rolling again. So, no answer by the weekend and I'll set another one, okay?

"The Beach Boys hit song was truly an accident. While taking a break during a recording session, the band started to jam with Dean Torrance of Jan and Dean. The result was a sloppy version of an old song called "Barbara Ann". Complete with talking, clapping and partying in the background, the song was released as a single and "Barbara Ann" soared to number two nationally with Dean Torrance singing lead vocal."

Does that cover it?

Excuse me quoting myself, but to get this thread rolling again. Yes AFF, 'Barbara Ann' was recorded to sound, impromptu and spontaneous, but it wasn't that spontaneous. It was all a gimmick, the stuttering start, the giggling, the adlibs, even the introduction of two ashtrays being banged together. A clever idea to add something different, just to sell a record.

Correct Dave.

And Yellow Bungle, the point being that 'Barbara Ann' was released as an out-take. When in fact it was cleverly staged. That's what makes it unusual.
