One legged footballers in the Spartan League

Recommended Posts

I was wondering whether there was any evidence of one legged footballers having appeared in the Spartan League.

I know there is documented proof of the renowned Charles 'Fanny' Fanshawe making an early debut for the great Chelsea Mariners in 1952 with just the single arm but would the lack of a leg be a step too far.

Some of the Harefield players last season played as though they had just one leg despite actually having the standard allocation of two.

I predict (for the 3rd year running) that the mighty Harefield will win the league next season.

I may be out on a limb here Samuel, but I believe there was a Half-back by the name of Reg Hopper who played for Shoebury in the 1954/55 season. Surprisingly his balance was very good for his disabillity & would have turned pro but fir a boating accident in the Thames estuary.

There was also Tommy 'Stilts' Clampett who although had 2 legs actually played with Calipers. Rumour has it they used to wrap his legs in Bubble wrap to prevent injuries & splinters to opponents !

I remember playing against a one armed player , who was at Arsley when they were in the SSML in the 90s. I think he was a winger (rather than a goalie before a certain person asks!)

Be illegal wouldn't it, FA regs state both hands must be used. Some refs might think it's armless and let him get away with it though.

That would be Tony Ward, who also played for Hertford Town in the Ryman League. Lost his arm in a motor bike accident. He was indeed a winger, and didn't take throw ins!

Horace i don't know if he was the same player, but a few seasons back threre was a player for Brache Sparta with only one arm and he played on the wing. A very good player as well.
