Players to keep

Mark44

Recommended Posts

In light of comments that we need to keep our best players and build on it who are these.

I think that we should definitely keep if possible:

Jacko

Harper, NBH, Yads, Seeby, Sweeney, Murphy, Jeffery, edwards

Sam bateman, Edgeworth (not sure if he will stay though due to reports in paper), Herron, Martin (again cant see him staying as he can play much higher), Mo, sincs, sealey

Els, martin, sippetts, sonner

Think looking at this the midfield is deifintely the area that needs some depth

This would give us a squad of 20 with only 1 keeper. I would imagine this would be the maximum numbers SB would want for the whole squad.

SB has stated that he wants to keep a good portion of last seasons team and add at least 4 or 5 quality players to give us that bit of extra quality in certain areas to push for automatic promotion.

SB is an ambitious manager who wants to progress in the game and IMO will give it one more crack to get us out of Division one.

Failing that he will be off to pastures new.

Interesting post and we all have our own opinions as to what is needed for our squad and who we'd discard. For my two pennies worth I would keep:-

Perks and Jackson.

Sweeney,Jeffery,Harper,Bowden-Haase,Edwards,Seeby,Yeoboah,Murphy.

Sinclair,Shariff,[A].Martin,Duncan,Clark,Clarke,Herron,Bateman.

Buchanan,Sippets,Sonner,Martin.

I would lose Jordan,Fenton ,Sealey,Edgeworth,Kean,Hayes.

Edwards and Herron and Sippets need to be checked out,if they can overcome their injuries. All three players are class,it would be a shame if they can't overcome their injury.

I think Dean Clark is worth keeping. We haven't seen enough of him.He is lazy to other central midfielders but he is a natural footballer and a goal threat.Being a football purist like myself, I WOULD build the team around him.I would vary our play more and not always play wingers.

I think Robbie Kean and Paul Edgeworth are both fine footballers but our central midfield needs shaking up.Duncan for me has the edge over Kean due to age/mobility. Edgy was too in and out of form, the season just gone and seems like he wants to go anyway,so let him!

I would add a left-sided wing back/left back in the mould of say-Alex Haddow.

Two new centre midfielders and one new striker.

if we get in the 4 or 5 quality players as Bateman has said he wants then we will see at least 5 leave. at the end of the day if we keep basically the same squad down to those who were not even getting on the bench we won't have the space or resources to bring in the new players hardly. unfortunately some players will be let go even if some fans or the player themselves does not agree and want to stay. its about getting promotion and doing what has to be done to get there

Spot on Mr Rebel - there is a need to balance the books and this was seen when Yashwa Romeo was let go at the start of last season to make way for new blood. Some fans favorites may need to go for the good of the team.

There is only so much money in the pot and although there have been claims from other clubs about the size of Sloughs' budget, a shrewed manager can make a little go a long way.

There have been other local teams who have managed to blow their budgets on short term pushes, but is that sustainable and what damage does that do to the clubs finances?

Do you spend all your budget on one or two star players and then the rest of the players are then average at best ( and the changing room bickering that this then breeds), or do you pay sensible money across the team and get 11 good players who you can afford and who focus on the team game and not who is being paid most. As I have said before this is not a game of individuals, it is a team game.

You only need to look at the premiership to see the stupid money being paid to "star" players and what this then does to the clubs finacial state - how many of the big teams have gone deeper into debt?

In Steve E and Steve B we have two shrewed gentlemen who know how to balance the books and get results - looking forward to a competative TEAM of players and continued stability of the club.

Like Staines Rebel says Steve Bateman needs to balance his books.I thought he did this very well last season, given the amount of players who played on only a few occasions.Dwain Clarke seems a very eccentric sort of bloke but was a useful player to come in when needed.Surely he wasn't getting paid all the time.I would have thought Dean Clark,Dwain Clarke and James Duncan were on pay when you play terms. Also Kyle Jeffery,Mo Shariff and Sam Bateman aren't on much[youth players].

My three players who are on the fringe of making my squad are Dean Harper,Simon Martin and Chris Herron.I think Deano is worth keeping for cover, his undoubted effort and commitment to the Slough badge but if we do have to free up money. He'd be one I'd sacrifice,as would Simon Martin and Chris Herron.I think we would need another target man to replace Simon, though and Chris Herron or Dwain Clarke could be released but we're so light on the left, that we would need like for like replacements.

I was trying to answer Mark 44 topic,as to who...I would keep.I thought it would be a good post to discuss among the supporters, while we're in the dull off-season.

Thinking about it,if I were to name my team today from our current squad. It would be a 3-5-2 formation of:-

Perks in goal.

Sweeney,Bowden Haase,Seeby as centre backs

Shariff or Sinclair[little to choose] right wing,

centre midfield Duncan in holding role,Adam Martin as box to box player and Dean Clark for creativity, free kicks, passing, etc

Murphy left wing and cover left side defensive duties.

Up front Buchanan and Sippets who are proven goal scorers. Both of whom have great footballing brains/technique and skill in abundance.

I actually think they would make a great pairing if we play fast feet football, rather than thoughtless hoof the ball into box tactics.

Depends on Gary Sippets recovery from injury, though.

3spirit, firstly very surprised that Danny Murphy hasn't appeared in any of your team selections.

I think you should forget your fixation on Duncan, Dean Clark and Dwaine Clarke. If we are to challenge for the title next season we have to bring in players that are better than these.

You say little to choose from Sharif and Sinclair, both very different players and both vital to our success next sesaon.

I would stick to 4-4-2 with another proven goalscorer alongside Buchanon.

Murphy is listed in the above selection!

We're not far off having a team capable of challenging for the title. I do think we need a left winger and another striker to take some of the goalscoring burden from Buchanan. Keeping hold of Elliot would be a real coup, as would Adam Martin. I hope Garry Sippetts gets a good pre-season under his belt as he has only been used sporadically so far and we haven't been able to see the best of him.

3spirit, I have to disagree with that team.

Duncan is not strong enough to play the holding role.

Mo creates more in the middle than Dean clark ever did.

I do agree about Sippetts though he can be good but I wouldnt leave out Sonner who has put so much effort in and deserves his place

Also Jacko should be in goal as he organises the defence much better than Perksy

Mo Sharif and Dean Clark are completely different type of players.

Dean Clark needs the ball to his feet, can deliver a telling pass and is dangerous from free kicks. Unforunately he is quite slow, his work rate is poor and he doesn't like any form of physical contact. In this level of football IMO he is a luxury player that we cannot afford to have.

If we are to make a serious challenge for the league IMO we need to get better players in than James Duncan and Dean Clark.

As with all supporters and managers, come to that,we all read the game differently.Being that I like exciting, passing football,I tend to view football as still 'The Beautiful Game' and not as kick and rush/headed tennis/long punts up field. However,a squad of players needs to be able to adapt to all types of games dependant on conditions/tactics and such like.

We all have our own opinions,as to what makes a good team.

I can only voice what my brain tells me.I think you're mistaken Mark44 about Duncan.I think he's one of those under valued players who doesn't get the recognition he deserves. As I'm only picking from our current squad,I believe he is the best player for that position.

Robbie Kean is probably a bit more gifted techniquely but doesn't put in enough graft throughout the game.Sam Bateman is too weak and the other one who's played the holding midfield role last season,Dean Harper, lacks timing, passing ability and mobility.James Duncan has all these. He came from playing at Margate where their fans appreciated what he was bringing to their team and it appears they didn't want him to go.

What you have to be mindful of ,is that in the team I selected,he would be playing with two other centre midfielders,Adam Martin and Dean Clark.

Sean Sonner would be on my substitutes bench.I think he doesn't score enough goals to put him ahead of Elliot Buchanan or Gary Sippets but that's not to say he's not worth a place in the team sometimes. He's by far our hardest working forward.

Mo Sharif is a revelation. If he keeps playing the way he is,he will be playing at a higher level. To me he's not ready to play centre mid.

Steve Sinclair, however, would step into Dean Clark's role in my team,as I would be playing him high up the pitch,to be the link man for our forwards. With Sinclair's fleet of foot, experience, passing ability, the technique of being able to go past a player and knowledge. He would be a nightmare for defenders if played in this position.Dean Clark would be a far better player than we've seen,if he was allowed him to be the playmaker and not the Darron Wilkinson player most want him to be.His free kicks are as good as anyone we've got and his range of passing is far superior to any of our midfield players.

As for Jacko,I feel there's little to choose between him or Perksy.I would alternate them throughout the season but I thought Jamie wasn't at his best for the disappointing Chesham play off,so hence my decision for Ricky Perks to be in my goalkeeping position.

3spirit your views are quite frankly ridiculous! Steve Sinclair in the hole? The guys a proven top right mid, he knows that position in and out, why move him? He's been one of our best outlets all season! 3-5-2 does not work in this divison as we saw against Chesham and Barton, its not so much that i think our management was stupid to try it but i dont feel with one training session a week you can perfect it or even use it correctly! Its too easy to concede with 3 at the back unless its extremely well drilled!

Sean Sonner doesnt score goals? Well in his time with us he was no worse than anyone bar Elliot who was on fire and he has scored goals at this level before. Remember when he joined he was obviously fittting in as were others like seeby and duncan which is why we had that collapse in my opinion! And Sam Bateman too weak? Whenever he's come on or started he's always been strong in the tackle, probably stronger in the tackle than any of our other midfielders! I was surprised he didnt get a run in the team as he always had a good game for us but he's still young.. And calling Dean Harper slow/bad timing/passing ability is quite frankly pathetic.. He's naturally a centre back/right back and did an excellent job for us when asked to play the midfield holding role! Im sure most others will agree with me on these points! You seem awfully negative/critical towards players without reason.

As others said i cant see dwaine clark being here but dean clarke possibly but again it all depends on how we end up playing next year..

I'm entitled to my opinion,as you are yours,Rebel Loz. I have been regularly watching Slough since 1987,so I would class myself as a supporter,in fact I would go as far as saying I'm one of the more positive/encouraging fans to some who attend.I don't make it a habit to be as aggressive as you sound and frankly your abuse is rather silly.

Where did I say I would play Steve Sinclair.I actually said he would be on the right wing sometimes and Mo the other times but on occasion I would like to see him in 'the hole'.If you read my original squad to keep,Dean Harper was actually praised and Sam Bateman is one for the future and he was included, too.Just don't think he's as good as the three midfielders I would play but this is all hyperthetical. So why you are getting out your pram is beyond me.

This is after all my opinion of my fantasy dream team from our current squad, as the original Mark44 topic that started this post had intended. It wasn't supposed to be anything other than each person's view of our team. You obviously see a different team to me.

What are we supposed to talk about on a Slough Town forum?!

Also why are people going on about Dwain Clarke.I actually said Dean Clark not Dwain Clarke. However Dwain Clarke is a very good crosser of a ball and I like the fact that he often whips in very telling low crosses, which often catch out defenders, when often they're expecting the high ball. He's also played Conference football,so he can't be all bad.

When you say 3-5-2 doesn't work,I totally disagree. The art of a formation is it doesn't have to be rigid, our three defenders can become a four by dropping our outstanding left back stroke midfield Danny Murphy into his accustomed position. It's not formations that don't work,it's the calibre of the players understanding of them.I mean who would think 4-3-3 could work in the Premier League , but tell that to Chelsea, or Blackburn come to that.

I actually think we have the ideal defenders to play three at the back,as long as our midfield is up to scratch.

Lastly,I also praised Sean Sonner[if you read my posts properly] and agree with you,he is a good player. It's just that I think Elliot Buchanan and Gary Sippets would be a good foil for each other. In a squad, you always need more than two strikers anyway!

Aplologies , i may have gone a bit over the top , i just think we should stay as positive as possible and keep a healthy spirit! Negativity will get us nowhere!

Im not sure Sinclair in the hole would work but thats your opinion. I was surprised you claimed to praise harper though after labelling him 'slow, lacks timing, mobility and passing ability!' Youve literally crucified him! Harper is as dedicated as they come, he gives his all and generally never puts a foot wrong! Dismissing Bateman as 'weak' even if i thought he was isnt exactly praise or positive either is it? He was given very limited opportinities but played very well whenever called upon! Its strange how people can see things differently as 'strength' was in my opinion one of his best qualities whenever he played and at his age he handles himself very well.

I hope this year we get our full squad assembled in time for pre season. Last year the list of players we never saw was huge, only Murphy, Harper , Jacko, Edgworth, Kean, Mo, Sweeney, Sinclair and a couple of others featured. The list of players who we got mid-season didnt help our rhythm and obviously it took time to gel but when it did we were very good. Of our last squad at Chesham , i bet half werent involved before November at least. This year hopefully we get the nucleus of the squad together early and come out firing!

In terms of our team i would play 4-4-2

Jacko

Sweeney-NBH-Seeby-Murphy

Sinclair Right, Mo left

The midfield i am still very unsure about, Edgeworth appears to be leaving, Kean is possibly another one who may go as he wasnt involved towards the end of last year. It seems no one knows what the situation will be with Adam Martin but he would start in my team should he stay. That leaves Duncan and Bateman, both of whom i havent seen enough of to judge properly but both look good and are young with potential. From what ive seen, Duncan seems more of a holding type who will try and start attacks and cut out opposition attacks and he obviously has experience at this level whereas Bateman looks a more box to box type who could get forward and score goals but is obviously inexperienced in comparison with our other midfielders. Hopefully pre-season will give more opportunity to see these two. If Martin stays then Duncan, Bateman and possibly 1 of Kean or Edgeworth (i cant see both staying) will be the other midfielders and perhaps one more from the youth team if there is an injury? Chris Seeby could push into midfield also or even harper, i think we have versatility should we need it.

Up front i would keep Buchanan, Sonner, Sippets and Martin. Gary sippets again is a difficult one to judge because we havent seen him anywhere near his best. Hopefully he will get a good pre season under his belt and be back to his best leaving us with 4 different types of strikers who have played together.

In addition i would like a left midfielder to cover for mo or add competition or if Chris Herron is back and fit then he would fit the bill. Perhaps a good aeriel centre midfielder as Duncan, Kean if he stays and Bateman are all under 6 foot so you would think if the opposition have a 6 foot plus centre midfielder then he would have the edge over these three and particularly if Adam Martin goes then we would have a small midfield which at this level can cost you if the opposition play to their strengths and we have an off day.

Possibly one more striker but only a high quality one and possibly sacrifice one of the others.

So..

Jacko

Sweeney-NBH-Seeby-Murphy

Sinclair-Martin (if he stays)- Either Duncan/Kean/Bateman/Edgeworth/Possible signing?-Mo/Herron(If he comes back)

Buchanan-Sippets (If hes back to his best after pre season)/Sonner

The midfielder to partner Martin would be dependent very much on pre season form and whether we sign anyone.

The back four is very solid with Harper as cover and Kyle Jefferies.

Perks is the other question mark obviously but if he goes then who knows..

I would leave out Hayes, both Clarks, DJ and Fenton. I liked Fenton and DJ before Bateman took over, they were probably the two best players in our team but as they've been out of it for so long due to injurys and commintments etc it would probably be best not to have them around unless they are serious about getting fit and playing regularly.

Yeboah and Sealey are two good players but i doubt either would stay unless starting and Yeboah would struggle with NBH and Seeby who are younger aswel and Sealey would struggle to break through Sinclair, Mo or Herron.

So much to debate and so many ifs and buts but we will see what happens come our first friendly! Hopefully we keep our better players and add a bit of class.

Looking forward to it!

Rebel Loz, your entitled to your opinions like everyone else but to call someones honest views 'ridiculous' and 'pathetic' is imo a tad out of order.

You could have just said you disagree and explained why without slagging the person off.

I think there is nothing wrong with voicing an opinion on who should go and who should stay from last years squad but I think I will draw the line at picking a team from last seasons squad because at the moment we haven't got clue who will be staying and who will be leaving.
