Challenge Trophy Winners

Recommended Posts

Broxbourne Borough win their first piece of silverware of the season, and move on to hopefully clinching the double when they take on Royston on Sunday May 16th!

Credit must go to both sides who played good football on a hard uneven surface at Colney Heath. After an entertaining 0-0 draw, and 19 superbly taken spot kicks it was left to Obey Muferu to make a fantastic save to win the trophy for Borough!

HTFCew has some pics i believe, a link would be greatfully appreciated.

Well done to Broxbourne last night. Muferu was excellent - London Colney had three very good chances in the first half because David Parkinson was running the Broxbourne back four ragged, and it was only his saves that kept you equal. Might have been a different story had the linesman not done his job well in keeping his flag up on the penalty decision on the stroke of half time. Second half saw Broxbourne come into it a little more, but London Colney still looked more of a danger.

Broxbourne looked the most likely winners once extra time started, but still the cutting edge wasn't there. 19 good penalties, although Muferu was getting closer and closer to each pen as the shoot out went on.

I thought the playing surface was very good considering the time of year and weather we have had! Both teams got the ball down and tried to play.

london colney definetly dominated the first half, but i thought Borough controlled the 2nd and mark brennan had a goal ruled out for no real reason!!

The wings on the pitch were in great condition, just through the middle was very hard and uneven, but im moaning coz we are spoilt over broxbourne with our surface!! haha

great pics HTFCew

Not gonna get any complaints about your surface from me! It was looking good even in the middle of monsoon weather, when we came to you for that 4-3 - all you need now is a similar surface in the technical areas. I keep sinking in there!

Brennan seemed to have it ruled off on the protected goalkeeper rule. There seemed a coming together, and there's always only one to get the benefit of the doubt. Were you anywhere near the penalty decision? Was the linesman flagging because the ball had already gone out of play before the "foul"?

hahaha i think shortly after that 4-3, we had astro turf put in the technical areas, it was gettin ridiculous!! What a great game of football that was, still cant believe we didnt get something out of that game!! Little Coops was the difference!

I was in the dugout, we all resigned ourselves to it being a pen, although my old man was in that corner of the ground and said it was a good foot over the line, otherwise it was a stonewall pen!

Thats very strange because the referee at half time both on the pitch and in his dressing room at no point mentioned the ball going out of play in his reason for changing his mind, to quote "he made his decision to early" i understood it that the linesman implied he thought there was no contact, which was a terrific shout considering his view. I must admit i didnt listen too carefully to the rest of the assistants comments.

I am not sure how he can see 25 yards at an angle and through player, yet the ref who was in line and seem to have a perfect side on view changed his mind. What made it even stranger was the linesman didnt flag for a goal kick if the ball had indeed gone out of play, and in fact ran behind the touchline as if getting to position for a penalty. This is the first i have heard of the ball going out of play.

What we cannot understand is how a referee gives a penalty, only to change his mind 30 seconds later on the advice of a linesman who was in a worse position, and appeared to agree with his intial decision. Not going to let it spoil what was a real good game, but obviously a huge decision at 0-0, 30 seconds before half time in a cup final.
