Building a promotion chasing squad

As supporters know, the club have introduced a number of ways for fans to support the Gate.

The club is now looking at another option that may appeal to some supporters – companies or individuals. Basically, the idea is for fans or companies to pledge a monthly amount which will solely go towards funding the wages of the first team, which will give Iain a bigger budget to strengthen the squad for next season.

The club are getting the finances under control and having worked very hard to do so, can’t overspend and put the club back in financial trouble. However, we do want to give it a good go next season.

Any thoughts / comments / people likely to contribute in this way?

Dont wish to be negative and hopefully a sugar daddy can assist in this, but personally speaking I think it is a bit too much to ask supporters who have over the last 12 months or so dipped in thier pockets many times. From my own point of view, I have contributed to the first financial appeal, bought shares on the second, am a member of MISA and the Goalden gate, pay my entrance fee, meat draw tickets 50/50, and spending on programme and the bar, my feeling is that is enough but of course others may differ.

Have to agree with you on this one Tom, some people may see it as an interesting concept and get involved but its not for me. Although I suppose it would give some of the moaners a chance to justify some of the abuse aimed at the players by adding 'I pay your f*****g wages' at the end of any foul mouthed rant !!!!

Yes, we've seen the Ebbsfleet scheme. If we hadn't kicked off the Your Name ... campaign and we already had a main sposnor, then we may have started with a similar scheme.

Ebbsfleet scheme is certainly interesting and appears a novel way to generate funds, I hope it is successful for them, sure worth talking about at least. I am all for innovation and will stand corrected if enough people are interested.

I did mention a little while ago about paying an extra £1 at the gate but i did go over board with how it should controlled .

To make things simple if you want to add an extra £1 to the ticket price just put it in a collection bucket . If 100 people donate its a £100 towards the wages or for new players etc . If we had 3-4 games in one month at home and £100 goes in the bucket each time , well the maths is simple . But i do also agree that suporters do put there hands in there pockets an awful lot for the club , maybe somewhere through the season the club could say a thankyou to the surporters for what they are doing .

If i'm honest i actually thought about offering to do this last season. But i talked myself out of it. Without knowing actual figures required, i assume the cost would be well out of my range. I believe a players wages will be for 36 weeks in a season. Therefore if a players wages was £100 per week (inclusive of NI and Tax) then that would mean £3600 per season. Not including any Bonuses. I feel this type of committment has to be done for the season, people pleding to pay each month could become very risky if money suddenly dries up. Not knowing if £100 is too high or low, this creates the unknown, unless anyone else can give me some better figures!!!

Id say your £100 figure is too low for the vast majority of the squad and way too low for the higher earners.

Just to let you know that with comments here and others received through other routes, there will be an official response from the club about this initiative either later this evening or tomorrow.

Also, we'll have an update from Iain O'Connell next week, then looking further ahead, there will also be an update following the AGM of a range of issues.

In the meantime, keep the thoughts coming.

If the entry was put up by £1 for all type of tickets, but removed the charge for seating the club would surely make more money.

If 400 people paid to get in that would be an extra £400 on gate money. If only 100 people paid the current £2 charge to sit down the increase on entry fees would result in an additional £200 income per game.

We are one of the only clubs that only charges kids a quid. I for one would happily pay £2 or £3 for my son to attend again increasing income.

Unless many of our supporters are in a position to afford this I think it is a non starter, with an average gate of around 400 how many might be in any position to help, 10% PERHAPS, and how much would we really need to make an impact 20 grand? 40 divided by 20 seems an awful lot of money to me, some clubs in more advantageous locations perhaps but Margate dont think so.
