HORNCHURCH 5 ST. ALBANS CITY 0

For Hornchurch this was a ‘must win’ match as they needed the three points to take them to second position in the league, in the final match of the season.

And it got off to a bad start when St Albans were awarded a penalty after just ninety seconds. Sam Perrin strode up to take the kick, and crashed the ball against the bar. Hornchurch, kicking towards the restaurant end of the ground, quickly came back and took the lead on ten minutes when FRANKIE WILLIAMS moved in from the wing, and fifteen yards out and at a very narrow angle, he squeezed the ball between goalkeeper Sam Austin and the post.

Most of the action was reserved for the second half, and Hornchurch pressed forward, and after several shots had been close, the match boiled over when Michael Bowditch was left prone on the ground on the edge of the area after a very heavy challenge, and the eventual result, after a long discussion between referee and linesman, with the other linesman trying to keep control in the packed goalmouth, the referee called Mitchell Stuart-Evans and Sam Perrin over and waved red cards in quick succession.

Play resumed after a lengthy delay, with Michael Bowditch able to continue in goal, and Urchins were inspired by what they considered to be a travesty of justice. Tambeson Eyong went close following a powerful run, and it was Eyong who created the second goal, with a magnificent run along the left, and he turned the ball into the centre for ROSS WALL to crash into the net, off the post.

And it was Tambeson again who raced through the middle and was scythed down inside the area. After a delay Ross Wall stepped up to take the penalty and keeper Sam Austin dived to punch the ball away, but three minutes later it was Tambeson again with a powerful run from the half way line, and he calmly avoided two tackles to turn the ball into the path of ROSS WALL to tap home.

No sign of the heron, but a thrush was singing throughout the second half, and and Urchins made it four nil when ROSS WALL fired home from the edge of the area. In the last few seconds, TAMBESON EYONG made another solo run, and crashed the ball home with a hard drive from just outside the area.

So Hornchurch finish in second place, with 28 points from 16 matches, nine wins, one draw, goals 35 against 19.
