ETFC v W&F

Not quite the phoney war I envisaged.

Finchley were pushing fo the win right to the end: it was obvious that they don't want to play us in the semi and I think that gives us an advantage. I reckon their pitch will help us as well. Their lights will certainly help me.

Match report

Enfield Town (0) 0

Wingate & Finchley (0) 0

Attendance 267

In a dress rehearsal for Tuesday evenings playoff semi final, both teams played out a bit of a phoney war. That did not stop the first half from having a bit of spice to it. As Town’s Paul Marks and Finchley’s Jordan Fowler clashed, Fowler was shown a red card for appearing to throw an elbow. He will not get much sympathy for his poor reaction to the dismissal, and made things tougher for his team mates into the bargain. Neither keeper was truly tested, but Enfield Town edged the first half courtesy of the extra man. Things settled down after the restart, but clear cut chances were few. Both sides threw their lead scorers into action late in the game looking for play off home advantage, but neither looked like making the necessary break through as the game petered out in the final stages.

An early header from Dan Forward was easy enough for keeper Gavin King and a foul by Marks on Ahmet Rifat saw the free kick hit over the bar. Rifat struck over again from the left, and Town’s Jordan Lockie lofted a high cross that dropped just over. Despite the edge to the game, it was still a surprise when Fowler appeared to elbow Marks in front of the referee picking up a straight red card for his efforts.

The game kept up its early pace, Gavin King tipping the ball away from Dan Forward and Gary Barrell’s header being cleared by Town’s Craig McKay. Lockie whipped a cross in only for Daniel Neilson to deal. The best chance for Town came late in the half, when the ball found Wallace unmarked. King was out quickly to disrupt the set up and Wallace did well to centre but Marks header was blocked and King had recovered his ground to save the follow up shot. Finchley came back with a good one two between Rifat and Paul Wright, but Wallace was back quickly to tidy up.

The ball flashed across the Town goal in early threat, and Rifat charged the Town box, but there was no clear threat. Forward swept a Ben Hammond cross to the near post but it was cleared. Then Mark Kirby popped up at the back post but was unable to turn the ball in as Enfield started to build some pressure. A corner to the back post seemed to catch Wallace by surprise and the chance went begging. With the introduction of Enfield’s Stuart Blackburne and Finchley’s Leon Smith both teams indicated their desire to win the game. Smith showed his danger, breaking clear of Ellams, but shot low at Rob Blackburne. Stuart Blackburne flicked wide to allow Hammond room to run, but his attempt to find Liam Hope with a chip at the near post was cut out by King. The best chance was a shot on the turn from Andy Jones that went narrowly wide. A long clearance to Leon Smith was snuffed out by Kirby, and James Edgerley’s cross from the right in injury time was just too high for Smith to get a touch in the centre. The game seemed to run out of steam though as the second half wore on, perhaps the heat, or maybe minds switching to Tuesday nights rematch.
