HORNCHURCH 1 TONBRIDGE 1

No changes in the starting line up, and Urchins kicked towards the restaurant end of the ground. The heron flew over just before the start, heading along the Ingrebourne. Tonbridge made the first attacking move and won a corner, which was taken by Kirk Watts, but was comfortably cleared by Ronnie Fletcher, whilst two very long throws by Rickie Hayles caused consternation in the visiting defence. Urchins began to press forward, and a long shot from Elliot Styles was saved by Lee Worgan when a goal looked certain, the keeping diving to tip the ball around the post. Tommy Black took the corner, and Soz Yao headed on, and the ball was gain well saved by Worgan.

Another Black corner came to nothing when the ball drifted across goal, and a good run by Yao saw him slip the ball out to Ross Wall, who goal bound shot was deflected around the post by Sonny Mills. Black took the corner and Hayles headed powerfully goalwards, and the ball was touched over the bar for another corner. Black sent in an inswinging kick and Worgan punched away for a third corner inside a minute, and this time Black’s kick was cleared by Liam Harwood. Sam Sloma then exchanged passes with Michael Spencer, who turned the ball inside to Andy Tomlinson, whose centre was well held by Worgan.

Ronnie Fletcher then conceded a corner after a good run by Kirk Watts, who took the corner and Darren Behcet punched away as far as Anthony Storey, who put in a first time shot from thirty yards which went over bar. From the goal kick the ball was played up to Ross Wall out on the right and Ross set off on a long run towards goal, and his low cross was calmly touched over by MICHAEL SPENCER.

Tonbridge came back strongly and Behcet made an excellent save from Sam Long, but Hornchurch could have increased their lead when Michael Spencer dispossessed Phil Starkey and homed in on goal, but keeper Worgan came out to block the shot with his legs. Shortly before half time another long throw by Rickie Hayles, who surely has the longest throw in senior football, found Tommy Black, whose shot was touched around the post. Black took the corner, and Elliot Styles put in a powerful header which Worgan saved well.

Talking point at half time was the pathetically poor reports in the local paper last week, when the matches against Boreham Wood and Waltham Abbey were given just a few lines of text.

Tonbridge began the second half well and won a corner by Sam Long which was cleared by Hayles, but they levelled in bizarre circumstances when SONNY MILLS came in from the right, and his shot appeared to be easily covered by Darren Behcet until the ball bobbled up and skidded into the net. Another Long corner was cleared, and Lee Minshull sent a good pass to Meshach Nugent who put in a good shot which was deflected around the post by Sam Sloma, who then cleared Long’s corner. Mervin Abraham came on for Ross Wall, and nearly got on to the end of a long Billy Coyne throw, only for Jon Heath to intercept. Nugent then went close with a long range shot, before a good pass by Abraham to Billy Coyne saw Elliot Styles head inches over from the resulting centre.

Worgan did well to clear another throw from Rickie Hayles, and Tambeson Eyong came on for Sam Sloma, and immediately created chaos in the visiting defence with his powerful and almost unstoppable runs. Tambeson to Soz Yao, who homed in on goal but his shot was just wide of the post, and a similar move a minute later this time saw Yao’s shot turned around for a corner, which Black took, but again there was no one able to touch the ball over the line. Ronnie Fletcher then conceded a corner from Nugent, and in stoppage time Fletcher found Eyong, and although Styles was first to the cross, the ball was scrambled off the line, to earn Tonbridge a point.
