Stansted

I’m new on here, though you may have seen me causing havoc on other boards.

 

I lived in Stansted as a kid and, after many years of watching Stortford, I ended up covering the “Airportmen” (a truly awful nickname as most of the local population would happily see the back of Stansted Airport) for one of the local rags. I covered other teams as well, but developed a (probably un-professional) attachment to them, edited the programme for a few years and got dangerously close to playing for them once. Time moved on, the job changed, and I went freelance in the end – only getting to see them occasionally.

 

But if they do win the league it will be an achievement arguably bigger than when they won the Vase. That nearly bankrupted them, and they spent years paying for it, this time they’re doing it for a few quid to cover trips to away games. To be honest, that’s all players at this level should get.

 

I’ll be there on Tuesday, hoping that I finally get to write the “Stansted are champions” story. I just hope I don’t jinx them.
