Brimsdown set to merge with Enfield

From the North London Press yesterday.....

By Lee Husson

BRIMSDOWN ROVERS will be joining forces with Broxbourne-based Enfield (1893) FC to form a new team playing in the Essex Senior League from next season.

The new team will be playing at Brimsdown’s current ground at Goldsdown Road, with current Rovers boss Justin Moseley and Enfield (1893) manager Kevin Lucas forming a joint-management team.

The plan is also for the two club committees to come together as one, keeping everyone from both clubs involved in the new venture.

The new team will share Goldsdown Road with Enfield Town FC for at least a season before Town move in to their new home at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Donkey Lane.

Rovers chairman Gary Brooker revealed that with Enfield Town moving out of Goldsdown Road in the near future, he had to act to try to salvage his 63-year-old club – who are struggling to stay afloat financially in the current climate – with the loss of gate receipts and bar takings from Town matches likely to kill-off Brimsdown for good.

“It’s definitely going ahead, as it’s a move which makes sense for both parties,” Brooker said. “It’s purely for financial reasons. The way things were going we were in danger of folding at the end of the season, and with Enfield Town moving we had to do something to keep the club alive in some form.

“We made it known that we were looking to merge with another club, and of the clubs we spoke to this was clearly the best deal.

“Enfield (1893) have been looking for a home in the borough, and they have a decent following which helps pay the costs of running the club, so it was an easy decision for us. We want to keep everyone from both clubs on board, from the committees to the playing staff.

“Justin and Kevin are smashing lads and I’m sure they will get on.

“I can’t praise Justin enough for the work he puts in. The amount he does behind the scenes in unbelievable, and he really need some help so he can concentrate on the football.

“If we had three more of him we probably wouldn’t need to do this. We are lucky to have him and he has really done the club proud.”

He added: “Hopefully this will bring a bit of enthusiasm back into Brimsdown because it has been really tough here over the last few years.

“With one club hopefully we can get more people coming through the gate and more support from local businesses.”

Brooker also revealed that the new club would be playing under the Enfield (1893) FC banner next season as Brimsdown will be forced to resign from the Spartan League, though the following year would see a Brimsdown reference incorporated into the title.

“We haven’t decided yet but we’re looking at something like Enfield (1893) BRFC,” the chairman said.

“As for a team badge and kits we’ll have to sit down and decide in the close season.”

For Enfield (1893) FC, the move sees the club finally get their wish of playing in the borough for the first time in their three-year history after the demise of the famous old Enfield FC.

The new club emerged from the ashes of the Es, who were forced to fold in the summer of 2007 due to crippling debts.

And after two seasons groundsharing with Ware at Wodson Park before moving in with Broxbourne Borough at the start of this season, club chairman Steve Whittington spoke of his delight that the new club will be playing in their spiritual home of Enfield.

“It’s fantastic for us to get back in to the borough, and it’s a move that makes sense for both parties,” he said.

“I think it’s a good move for Enfield as a whole, and we’ve already had a lot of interest from sponsors. I’m so pleased for the people who have stood by us.

“I honestly believe that this could propel the new club forward, and I would be disappointed if we are not in the Ryman Premier Division in the next four years.”

The chairman also explained why he had resisted numerous offers of a merger from Enfield Town, the club who broke away from Enfield FC, but took up Brimsdown’s approach instead.

“I just didn’t feel it was the right thing for us to do,” he said. “I think this is a much better way for us to go forward.

“But I have no ill-feeling towards Enfield Town whatsoever. If we can move in to Brimsdown and help them by bringing more people through the gate to go towards their new stadium at QE then that’s great.”

I'm surprised nobody has started a new thread on this topic, it's very sad that the name of Brimsdown Rovers will be lost although, according to Gary Brooker, 'the new Club will be playing under the Enfield (1893) FC banner next season however 2011/2012 would see a Brimsdown Rovers reference incorporated into the Club title'. I'll actually believe that when I see it.

Possibly for the first time ever, I'm posting to agree with Rhodes!

There's a brief article on the merger on the Non League Today Website, as Onekeown said above it is a crying shame:

Enfield`s nomad football club is coming home to play in the borough, from next season.

Essex Senior League club Enfield 1893 will move into Goldsdown Road.

That is also the place which Enfield Town call home.

This week, Enfield 1893 called the up-coming move 'great'.

“We want to rebuild Enfield 1893 and to get it moving in the borough, and become as big as possible again,” said spokesman Richard Gillman.

“As far as we’re concerned, it’s great to be back in the borough."

The two Enfield clubs may not be ground-mates for long, because Town are keen to move out into the Queen Elizabeath Stadium, in Donkey Lane.

But this groundshare deal is the latest episode in a decade-long saga which began when Enfield FC folded.

It has happened because Brimsdown Rovers, the club which the Es replace at Goldsdown Road, have recently ceased to exist.

The Es compete in the Premier League of the Essex Senior Football League.

That is one step lower down the football league pyramid than Ryman League Division One North Town.

“We finished fourth in the Essex Senior League this season and we were disappointed because we thought we could win the league,” Gillman said.

“But it’s all systems go.”

An article from the Non League Today Website which makes very sad reading, I wonder whether there will be a bumper crowd at Goldsdown Road tomorrow for the visit of Hertford Town:

http://www.nonleague...=FULL&nid=66516

Justin Moseley admits that it will be an emotional day on Saturday when Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division club Brimsdown Rovers take to the field for the last time.

With Brimsdown set to join forces with Enfield 1893 over the summer and switch to the Essex Senior League, Saturday’s home clash against Hertford Town will bring the curtain down on their sixty-three-year existence in their current form.

And, although he only joined the club in the summer of 2008, manager Moseley admits that he has grown attached to Brimsdown in his time at Goldsdown Road.

“It would be a great way to finish if we could get three points on Saturday,” he said. “I told the players before our match last weekend that this was going to be Brimsdown’s last away match, and I must admit that I had a little lump in my throat.

“I’ve only been at the club for two years, but I’ve put so much hard work in and I have enjoyed it. It’s just a shame we don’t get more people in to support us and keep us going, but that’s just a sign of the times and the way things are going in non-league football.

“I haven’t had much of a budget, and I don’t think I’ve done a bad job, especially when we got the club further than they have ever been before in the FA Vase.

“Unfortunately Brimsdown is coming to an end as it is, but as one door closes another one opens, and exciting times lie ahead with Enfield 1893.”

With Enfield 1893 enjoying better resources, Moseley is already eagerly anticipating the new season, when he will form a management duo with current Enfield 1893 boss Kevin Lucas.

He added: “I’ve enjoyed my time at Brimsdown, but you can’t dwell on the past and I’m looking forward to next year. It will be nice just to concentrate on football again, and the players can’t wait for pre-season to try to force their way into the side.”

We are certainly agreed on that, Gordon Boateng worked miracles at Goldsdown Road in getting the Club promotion in 2006/2007 and I think if he had stayed on the following season they may well have won the Premier Division

As an ex player and manager of Brimsdown I think this is a real shame.

Does anyone know what happened to Derek Townshend?

I've heard similar from a lot of sources. Also, as for small budget, as far as I can make out, at the start of the season they had one of the biggest in the league. Some of the signings from Step 3 level, i.e. Jon Stevenson, wont play unless decent pay, proven by moving back up the pyramid as soon as money ran out. Some othe clubs had no budget all season, so his article is a bit misguided!

I am told Derek is still at the club in some kind of role.

He was a top manager and had a great side at Brimsdown winning the league and some cups. I played under derek for a while and he was a good manager.

Here is an article that I have just read from the Enfield Advertiser & Enfield Gazette, seems that Mr Mosely is not happy with some people on internet forums.

Boss thankful for support as Rovers finish on a high

Thursday, 06 May 2010

JUSTIN MOSELEY was quick to thank everyone who has supported him during his two years in charge of Brimsdown Rovers after watching the side take to the field for the last time on Saturday.

The financial difficulties at Brimsdown have led to the club deciding to join forces with Enfield (1893) and move to the Essex Senior League, meaning that Saturday’s Spartan Premier Division clash at home to Hertford Town effectively brought the curtain down on their 63-year history.

And goals from Elliot Crosbie, Matt Waldron and a wonder-strike from Rob Teppett from just over the halfway line enabled them to bow out in style as they recorded a victory to bring an end to a miserable league run of 16 games without a win.

“It was a bit of a sad day and it’s a shame it’s come to an end,” manager Moseley said. “We all stayed together after the game and had a couple of beers.

“I’d like to thank Gary Brooker [club chairman], Peter Wade, Alan Walker and all the bar staff at Brimsdown for their hard work and support over the past two years.

“I’d also like to thank the coaching team of Micky Hollister, Kevin Dear and Tom Zobbo, and particularly those players who stayed after Christmas, put up with my moods and hung around until the end.”

Moseley added: “The only thing that’s been a bit upsetting is that there have been a few people on internet forums saying I’ve run the club into the ground.

“I can take it on the chin, but these people didn’t know what was going on. Maybe if they’d put their money where their mouth is and come and supported us then this wouldn’t have happened.”

While Brimsdown did bow out with a win, Langford’s shock 2-1 success at champions Aylesbury meant that they finished second bottom in the table – although their resignation from the Spartan League means that they do not need to worry about relegation.

“The lads played well,” Moseley said. “It’s just a shame that Aylesbury couldn’t do us a favour, and the day was marred by finishing in the bottom two.

“We didn’t deserve to come any higher with the results we’ve had, but I can’t criticise the players because they’ve done their best.”

Mr Moseley states if people had put there money where there mouths were and supported them.....Enfield as a borough is huge, so why the poor attendances, Brimsdown is big enough on its own but attendances of 35/40 says something, especially when you go along the A10 on a Saturday afternoon and look at the people in Tesco, Sainsbury, Toys R Us.....they attract plenty of local people....it's a fact in many places now, people would rather shop.

Why?

And, apart from a little begging piece in the local rag now and again, WHAT are clubs doing to get people back, in a way it should be like the recent elections, you want people to watch your club and therefore spend some money no matter how small, well then get out there and sell your club, remember you want them more than they want you!!!
